Starts but when switch is released it dies

Starts and runs as long as you hold the key in the start position. As soon as you release the key it dies. Looses voltage to coil.

Starts but wont run after ignition switch is returned to the run position from the start position.

The problem is that when you have the switch in the START position, you are getting power to the ignition system, but not when in the RUN position. Most likely causes are a bad ignition switch, a faulty aftermarket alarm system [if it has one] or a bad ballest resistor wire going to the ignition coil's + terminal. You need to break out your test light and start checking to see where the fault lies.

Car starts but dies when key is released ?

I would start by replacing the ignition switch. That's the easiest and cheapest option to start with.

Turn the key it starts and when i letgo of the key it dies. Its getting fuel and spark it just will not stay running.

you may have a bad ignition switch problem where the internal contacts only work while holding the key in the start position and don`t make contact when the key is released.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad cab SLT 4x4 that won't start. The engine will turn over but, as soon as I release the key, it shuts off. The ABS and BRAKE dash lights stay on.

It could be a cam or crank sensor. Have someone plug a OBD II reader in and pull all the codes.
That will give you some idea.
Please let me know what you find.

My car wont stay running

Does the engine die as soon as you release the key, or does it run for a couple of seconds after you release the key and then die? If it dies as soon as you release the key, try holding the key for a few seconds and see if it will stay running as long as you are holding the key (the starter will make a grinding sound while holding the key but won't hurt anything). If it stays running while you hold the key then dies when you release it, that indicates that the ignition switch is bad.
