Can a fuel pressure regulator give your engine to much gas if it's bad

My engine is dumping a lot of fuel on my plugs

Fuel pressure reading will give you the answer.but O2 sensor,engine temp,trottle position sensor,poor combustion like cylinder compression spark plugs, valve timing
As you can see there a lot of things that can change the rich and poor fuel metering.

Our mountaineer is getting gas into the oil. What could possibly be the problem.


Fuel pressure regulator. or stuck open injector/s. The only way gas can reach the oil is threw the piston rings. Gas will seep threw them. regulators can dump a lot of fuel threw the plenum. An open injector will bleed off pressure(when turned off)) and dump gas right into the piston.

How do i fix engine giving out so much black smoke and not even powering?


Black smoke is unburned fuel and a lot of it, so maybe you have a fuel problem. I would first check fuel pressure to see if you have a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator problem. If the pressure is correct, next you could check for clogged or leaking fuel injectors.

If any cylinders are misfiring, that could be pushing a lot of unburned gas out the exhaust. Pull the spark plugs and see how they have been firing. That may indicate any problem cylinders. If all plugs are uniformly coated with a black soot, that means the fuel/air ratio is very rich. Check for air obstructions like a dirty air filter or check the fuel pressure regulator.

Why is gas coming out of the muffler


Could be a few things I can think of, leaking injector, leaking / bad fuel pressure regulator, or defective O2 sensor(s) making the computer read high air content and the ECM is dumping in more fuel to compensate. You can check your plugs for gas fouling to isolate either a single cylinder or multiple cylinders will give you an idea of what to look for. If only very fouled on a single cylinder, probably a bad or leaking injector on that cylinder. If evenly distributed among all cylinders, fuel pressure regulator. If you have a check engine light on, get the codes read at Autozone (free) and it may tell you if it is an O2 sensor problem. Random misfire or multiple misfire codes would bring me back to the fuel system components. Get this taken care of right away and change your oil when fixed, you can cause severe damage to the engine with fuel going excessively into the cylinder(s) and / or crankcase.

Or maybe too much fuel-backfiring in the exhaust is the burning of the unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Check the fuel pressure. You can rent fuel pressure gauges at autozone, I believe. If too low, possibly a bad filter or bad pump. If too high, test the fuel pressure regulator. a failed regulator can let extra gas into the engine through the vacuum line on it. Take off the vacuum line to the regulator, and watch the regulator for a minute with the engine running. If gas starts oozing out of the vacuum port at the pressure regulator, the regulator has failed and must be replaced.
If pressure is correct, at least you have eliminated that as a problem. Check the air filter, check spark plugs and plug gaps, more or less back to basic tune up.

2005 cavalier fuel pressure regulator


I doubt it is coming from the pressure regulator. The regulator should have a vac hose going to the manifold that would **** the gas into the engine and run very rich.
The short answer is YES that is very bad, but I wonder where the raw fuel is coming from.

My car will not start in the mornings or any extended periods of time .It will start after it has run for a while.It spits and sputters and shakes when trying to start it.When it does start and I press on...


here are a few possibilitys, a bad fuel pressure regulator . the vehicle runs rough, the engine will not start ( usually in mornings ) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. black soot on plugs, blake smoke from tailpipe, running rough, stalling. make sure fuel filter is not plugging up. or low fuel pressure from fuel pump. check fuel pressure regulator first. have a good day !! the regulator if bad will cause an instant drop in fuel pressure when turned off. and it will cause a delay in building sufficient fuel pressure,.when starting.

Its possible that its the pressure regulator. But its more likely that its the fuel pump or even the fuel filter You say it olny starts to run bad when you give it more gas. If it were the pressure regulator then it wouldn't matter becaues what that dose is keep the fuel pressure constant under all driveing conditions. Although the problem could be to much fuel witch could mean the regulator is allowing to much fuel to enter the system. Pull some plugs out and see what they look like they should be a tan color if the engine is running good if there gas fooled wet and black then its is to much fuel if there kind of white then its running to lean and its not enough fuel and you should check the delivery system pump and all filters well good luck

Runs poorly(very Rich, stumbles) when map sensor is plugged in, but runs smoother with it unplugged...new map sensor, EGR, TPS, O2, Fuel Pump, timing is right, good vacuum at map, no vacuum leaks,


If it is fuel injected you may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. The regulator is attached to intake manifold with a vacuum hose and the bladder sometimes fails causing gas to be dumped directly into the intake manifold. Only solution is to replace the fuel pressure regulator.

Hello chat1999: My name is Roger and I will help. If you have 5 injectors spraying fuel and one that is spaying a steam. You need to replace the one that is not spraying. The engine needs a preset fuel pressure in order to start. The one that is spraying a stream is open and the fuel pressure will never come up to what is required to start and run the engine. I would also look at the oil. If the injector is dumping fuel a lot of unburnt fuel will end up in the oil pan. Also the converter will feel the brunt of the bad injector. This will cause emission problems until all the fuel is burnt out of the system. You think the regulator is the problem. This is simple to check. Unplug the regulator and turn the key on. If fuel is observed coming from the regulator it is defective and should be replaced. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. This way I know it was helpful. The check engine light stays on my gas smells bad and my oil smells like fuel


You need to have the trouble code pulled so vehicle can be diagnosed. I suspect the engine is dumping fuel into the oil. If your fuel pressure regulator diaphragm ruptured this would give you the gas in the oil and a rich DTC. You could also have a coolant temp sensor that failed, making the computer think it's -40 degrees and commanding too much fuel-this too would make your oil smell like gas.
Trouble code would help in determining the cause. You can also remove the vacuum hose at the fuel pressure regulator-front left side of engine, on the fuel rail. It should be dry inside vacuum hose, if there is gas, the FPR diaphragm ruptured and more than likely that's the root cause of your problem.
