I have a 2005 LR3, last night the front passenger wheel locked up on me. When I applied small pressure to the brake, it just locks up. I stop na dput the car in reverse and it unlocks. It may run 20 f


There is definitely something out of the ordinary going on. The brake calipers have two pistons on one side which means that the whole caliper has to be able to move axially as the brakes are applied to evenly clamp the two friction pads against the rotor. There are no springs to release the brake pads from the caliper.
Probably one of the pistons is stuck causing the assembly to bind until you reverse the rotor's motion which releases the binding force. It is probably the lower piston of the two that is binding because that is where any crud in the brake fluid tends to accumulate.
If you take off the caliper off, you may be able to loosen the stuck piston with a brake piston removal tool and bleed fresh fluid through the system.

2009 town and country rear brake caliper does not come off


Sure it does

Only rust & the lip worn into the rotor from the brake
pads,holding it on

Grind down some of the out step & rust on the rotor you
can get to ,with an electric or air powered tool & sanding
disc

Then use a small pry bar or old screw driver in the caliper
& behind the pads to push the piston in some,then the pads
will clear the rotor

You will have to not only push in the piston to make room
for new pads,but screw in the piston if you have an internal
parking brake,open the bleeder also to make it easier

Just changed rear pads and rotors on my 2000 chev blazer..after test driving rear brakes were hot and smoking...brake pads seem to be sticking..are the calipers shot or do I need hoses or both?


  • Well when you looked at the brake pads after your drive were the pads stuck to the rotor?
  • First thing to do is double check your pad and rotor installation.
  • Also check to make sure the right parts were installed.
  • When you pushed back the pistons on your calipers did they flow back nice and smooth? Did they wedge in and get stuck? This would make the pads drag.
  • If you used grease did you get some on the pad by accident? If this is the case it will burn off.

  • How is the car stopping for you? Properly? Do you hear any grinding while driving slow? While driving fast? Over heating rotors will turn a bluish stain. That is when it is really time to be worried.
  • If your brakes are not dragging then give some time for the pads to ware in.
  • If the piston is stuck forcing the pads against the rotor all the time then you need to replace the calipers.
  • Don't forget to bleed the lines afterword.

The drivers front rim gets hot after driving and it doesn't coast


The brake caliper (piston) is probably stuck...sometimes caused by a brake down in the brake line connected to the rotor...not a bad replacement...when you remove the caliper...you can confirm this as the rotor should then turn freely...if it does not, the wheel bearing is bad...Hope this helps.

Question 1: How do i remove the rear rotor on my 1990 chevy Lumina Euro 3.1? I can't just pull it off. Is it just stuck or do i need to remove some kind of nut keeping it on? If so, where is it located?...


disc brakes work on a clamping principle as you said, on the rear of the lumina the caliper sliders tend to seize causing only the piston side to actuate, you will have to replace these pins and bushings as well, have fun

All new brake shoes on 97 jeep front callibers still sticking


The problem lays with the Caliper itself and/or the brake hose connected to the Caliper.
However if you replaced the pads, did you also replace the Rotors or have them Turned? The old pads wear the rotor. New pads on old rotors that have not been replaced or turned may end with rubbing or stuck brakes.
A simple way to test whether it's one and/or the other:
1. Remove the Caliper from the rotor, remove the pads. Keep for now the caliper attached to the brake hose.
2. Very slowly push on the brake, exposing more of the piston out of the bore. Not all the way. Usually until the rubber dust seal/boot is fully extended.
3. Check the seal/boot for cracks and tears, and if clean or not. Bad seals may prevent the piston from re-seating.
4. Using a c-clamp and pushing straight in: Try repushing the Caliper Piston back into the Caliper Bore (the cup back into the hole). It should go back in realitively easy.
5. If it doesn't go back in easy: Again slowly pump the brake and re-push the pistons back out to full extended seal/boot (but not the piston out of the bore).
6. Detached the brake hose from the caliper.
7. Again using a c-clamp and pushing straight in: Try again to repush the caliper piston back into the bore without the hose attached. If it goes back-in relatively easy - the caliper is okay...it is the brake hose.
8. If the caliper piston does not go back in easily - Replace the caliper.
9. When Installing the new (reman) caliper, remember to bleed the brakes.
TRY EITHER OR #10 OR #11 BELOW:
After the new Caliper is reattached to hose and has been bled:
10. Again push on the brake petal to fully extend the caliper piston fully (rubber seal/boot fully extended) Again do not push the piston out of the bore! Try pushing the piston back into the bore. If it does not re-seat relatively easy: Replace the brake hose.
11. Another method: After replacing the new caliper back on the rotor: Assumng the entire front end (2WD front wheel drive) or entire vehicle (2WD rear wheel drive) or (4WD all the time) is jacked up off the ground
a. Put the lug nuts back on the rotor.
b. Have helper Start the vehicle and place in Drive. Don't step on gas!
c. Have then let off the brake and then engage the brake.
d. When they let off the brake watch to see if the Rotor is turning or not, if rubbing or not. Or if still sticking.
e. With a new caliper, turned or new rotors, and still a problem? It is the brake hose!
12. Replace the brake hose and try again.

Another method but more expensive:
OR Replace the calipers, brake hoses; bleed and test!

If you have rear disc brakes it is probably very low pads grinding on the rotor.If you have rear drums it is probably very low shoes.Now if you here it when your foot is off the brake then its a stuck caliper(needing replaced) for disc or a stuck piston (also needing replaced) for drums

replace the hydraulic hose also --- the hose can collapse inside and the brake fluid cannot return, (allowing the pressure at the caliper piston to relieve), and your caliper sticks --- it is actually the piston that is stuck.

The single-piston floating-caliper disc brake is self-centering and self-adjusting. The caliper is able to slide from side to side so it will move to the center each time the brakes are applied. Also, since there is no spring to pull the pads away from the disc, the pads always stay in light contact with the rotor (the rubber piston seal and any wobble in the rotor may actually pull the pads a small distance away from the rotor). This is important because the pistons in the brakes are much larger in diameter than the ones in the master cylinder. If the brake pistons retracted into their cylinders, it might take several applications of the brake pedal to pump enough fluid into the brake cylinder to engage the brake pads
