GMC Sierra "service 4WD message" Need Help!

I was wondering if it is safe to drive my 2005 GMC sierra when I had the "service 4wd" light come on earlier today. I was getting ready to leave on a road trip (500 miles to my destination) and the "service 4WD message apperared. My truck was stuck in 4L (I did not puit in 4L), but i then could not get it out of 4L until I turned the truck off and then on again. It seems to be fine, but it is Sunday and the service dept at the dealership is closed. I would like to leave tonught if there will be no harm to the truck.

Thanks!!!!

You may need to change the fluid in the transfer case. My wife's SUV would take several secones to go in and out of 4wd. I changed the fluid (with oem) and it switches quick. Old stuff was dark and nasty. If you haven't changed it in a while, it might need it. Debris could be interfering with the solenoids.

If it will run in 2wd or 4H, you should be fine. May be just a solenoid in the transmission.

You should be fine to drive it home, as long as you don't drive it like that all year. There are a few things that activate the 4WD and one of the components has a failure and needs to be addressed. Good luck and hope this helps.

How to reset my 4wd light? I just installed my new 4wd buttons on my 2005 gmc sierra z71, and my 4wd light still comes on what should I do?

There is no such thing as a reset, if the light stays on a fault exists in the 4X4 control system, the control module has sensed that and turned the light on to alert you to the problem. It is likely that the power transfer case actuator motor is the problem or the wiring to it.

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra. After driving for a couple of miles the 'service 4wd' warning will display and not go away. The 4wd is fine. Do I need to reset a chip?

BY YOU HAVING AUTOMATIC 4 WHEEL DRIVE.YOU HAVE A SHIFT CONTROL MODULE IN TRANSFER CASE.IT CONTROLS YOUR 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM BY RECEIVING INFORMATION FROM SPEED SENSOR ON TRANSFER CASE OUT PUT SHAFT.TAKE IT TO DEALERSHIP.THEY WILL HAVE TO FIX IT.

4WD SERVICE

it means it is time to change the fluid in your transmission, and 4wd transfercase.
as well fluid levels in differential should be checked as well as greasing anything that can be greased.
that signal is tripped either from mileage reaching a certain amount, or a sensor giving poor results (usually low or contaminated fluids)

My service 4wd light appeared on my dash and my 4wd is not workin

Transfer case engages/disengages via a vacuum line. If the vacuum line is cracked, often by age and cold weather, it has to be replaced to allow a good vacuum pressure.
