I have a 2001 chevy malibu went to get gas turned off car got gas went to start it and nothing had it towed checked battery its good what could it be?

It could be your fuel pump, or the computer thinks the car is being hot wired. Try unhooking the battery for a few minutes and then try to start the car.

either replace ur ignition switch or replace ur starter solonoid
when u turn on ignition switch u should get a click fron a relay under dash listen for that and if u hear a click then u need to replace solonoid on starter or replace whole starter motor also clean and inspect battery cable good luck with this project

I have an 04 Malibu and when I get hard starts when I'm in the car I just press the accelerator down about half way and it always starts right up, some times I have to hold the accelerator down a little after starting to stop it from stalling but it is rare.

Won't idle after battery change... SOLVED! well, for me anyway. :)

I just experienced the same problem on my 2002 tundra last night, and fixed it this morning after sleeping on the problem. Here's how it went.
I cleaned the terminals, etc., and replaced the battery, as it was 7yo and old and on the verge of failing.
Immediately after this, the truck would start right up but the idle would drop to about 100 RPM, then slower and slower, and eventually stall. Every time.
I warmed it up and drove around the neighborhood for about 45 minutes, thinking the computer needed to re-learn it's Idle settings, etc... No change.
This morning, I decided to go after the cheap and easy fixes first...
Inspect throttle body... it was filthy full of black sticky dirty/sludgy stuff. I cleaned it off using a rag and some brake cleaner. DID NOT spray brake cleaner IN the opening; just on the rag and then wiped all of the gunk out of the opening, butterfly, and inside as far as my fingers would reach with the butterfly open.
Reassembled everything, started truck... runs perfectly.

Dead battery? Won't run? Dirty throttle body? How do these all tie together?! Here's why (to the best of my understanding).
Over the past 65k miles, dirt and gunk slowly but surely builds up in the throttle body. At some point, the computer senses that this affects the air/fuel mixture or something of this nature. The computer compensates for this, and stores it to it's memory. Sometime during the vehicles lifetime, the battery fails or is disconnected. The compensation settings that the computer stored are lost when the power is disconnected, so the next time the engine is started it's telling everything to behave as default... but the car isn't in a default state, there's **** in the throttle body... or a bad sensor, etc.
I could be way off, but my gut feeling is that this is correct. My advice: Pull the intake tube off the front of the engine and clean the gunk out of the throttle body. It should be the first thing to try, since it's the cheapest and easiest thing that I can think of.

Since the PCM uses info gatheres from the crank and cam sensors to calculate ignition - and there are no OBD codes - in all likelihood, the PCM itself is bad.

The Ignition Module, also transmits to the PCM.

It appears after all your testing - that the PCM is at fault.

It does not error report on itself (unfortunately).

The ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No adjustment is necessary (distributorless ignition) or possible.

The engines covered by this manual are equipped with distributorless ignitions, ignition timing is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), as applicable. No adjustments are possible. If ignition timing is not within specification, there is a fault in the engine control system. Diagnose and repair the problem as necessary.
Ignition timing is the measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which the spark plugs fire in each of the cylinders. It is measured in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
Ideally, the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder will be ignited by the spark plug just as the piston passes TDC of the compression stroke. If this happens, the piston will be at the beginning of the power stroke just as the compressed and ignited air/fuel mixture forces the piston down and turns the crankshaft. Because it takes a fraction of a second for the spark plug to ignite the mixture in the cylinder, the spark plug must fire a little before the piston reaches TDC. Otherwise, the mixture will not be completely ignited as the piston passes TDC and the full power of the explosion will not be used by the engine.
The timing measurement is given in degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston reaches TDC (BTDC). If the setting for the ignition timing is 10 BTDC, each spark plug must fire 10 degrees before each piston reaches TDC. This only holds true, however, when the engine is at idle speed. The combustion process must be complete by 23° ATDC to maintain proper engine performance, fuel mileage, and low emissions.
As the engine speed increases, the pistons go faster. The spark plugs have to ignite the fuel even sooner if it is to be completely ignited when the piston reaches TDC. Spark timing changes are accomplished electronically by the engine and ignition control computers.
If the ignition is set too far advanced (BTDC), the ignition and expansion of the fuel in the cylinder will occur too soon and tend to force the piston down while it is still traveling up. This causes pre ignition or -knocking and pinging-. If the ignition spark is set too far retarded, or after TDC (ATDC), the piston will have already started on its way down when the fuel is ignited. The piston will be forced down for only a portion of its travel, resulting in poor engine performance and lack of power.
Timing marks or scales can be found on the rim of the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover. The marks on the pulley correspond to the position of the piston in the No. 1 cylinder. A stroboscopic (dynamic) timing light is hooked onto the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire (2.2L engine only, on the 2.4L engines, special adapters are needed) . Every time the spark plug fires, the timing light flashes. By aiming the light at the timing marks while the engine is running, the exact position of the piston within the cylinder can be easily read (the flash of light makes the mark on the pulley appear to be standing still). Proper timing is indicated when the mark and scale are in specified alignment.


WARNING When checking timing with the engine running, take care not to get the timing light wires tangled in the fan blades and/or drive belts.

When you turn the key to the start position does the starter spin the engine ? The engine cranks no start ! Or nothing happens when you the key to start position ? no crank no start ? probably where the remote start wire was taped into the starter wire got broken and now the key side isn't attached to starter anymore. Id check the starter relay and fuse before anything

the motor is cranking. that tells us you have a good starter and battery. now we need to see if the fuel pump works and if you have spark. what you need to do is turn the key to the start position and see if you hear a buzzing noise from the gas tank. if you hear a buzzing noise the pump is good. have to see if you have spark. is the check engine light on

Your issue is with either spark or fuel delivery and you need to check the components in each system for proper operation. Such as pump, cables, camnshaft sensor, igniter, etc.

make sure your battery is good. turn on your lights, if ok for a good minute or two, your battery is ok, but if nothing turns on you have a dead battery.

Try shifting into neutral and pressing on the brake while turning your key. Sometimes when I'm in park my shifter doesn't make the switch that says I'm in park, if I turn the key...nothing....cause my car "thinks" it's in gear.

Problems starting


I own a 1998 Chevy Malibu personally, change the ignition switch I had the identical issue, the switch eventually stopped turning completely, my vehicle had to be towed!! Save yourself a headache, I got one from a junkyard for 2.00, but it had to be programmed for the vehicle, I would take it to a trusted shop or dealer.

on chevy malibu, turn key on engine off.let it stay on 10 to 15 minutes. then turn ignition off, take out key from ignition. after a minute start the car. this should work.
