89 Pontiac Grand Am will as I approach a stop sign die as I come to a stop. I feel it getting ready to quit as I approach the stop sign. It dies and will start back up but when I put my foot on the acceleltor it dies again. After it rests awhile its ok then it just does it again no reason or warning it just starts doing it again. Sometime can go for days before it does it again. Never know. Any suggestions?. It passed smog and has a new cat on it. And of course did not do it when they test drove it! ?????? Has been doing this for about a year. I dont drive it much just around town now as I am afraid to take it far. It runs ok other than that problem. When it stops the tach does not go crazy it just sputters and dies ????????????

Well if its an automatic it sounds like you have a bad lock-up switch in the transmission, you can either have it replaced or you can simply un plug it from the harness and the only thing it will effect is your fuel economy.

Spray the throttle body out with carb spray right before the butterfly plate or the throttle plate the thing that opens and closes with the gas pedal.
clean all the black carbon out right there at that plate and wipe it with a clean cloth.

I stopped at a stop sign, and when I was ready to continue that car died. I was wondering what would have caused this?

I would first check the vacuum hose in front of the engine. Sometimes this small rubber hose gets cracked which allows air in and it disturbs the gas mix. It is a rubber hose behind a few plugs, but it's directly in front of the engine. You can replace the hose yourself for a few dollars at any auto parts store. This may solve your problem without needing a mechanic.

Where is the fule fliter on 2001 pontiac grand am the car keeps dieing at stop signs and feels like is no power when you step on the gas

Your symptoms do not indicate a problem with the fuel filter, but it may be a good idea to change it anyway. Your filter is under car, center, below trunk area, rear of fuel tank, mounted in fuel line.
To better fix your problem, can you tell me if the engine light is on?
When you say no power, how bad? Will it go on the highway? How fast?

P0355 is a code I am getting on my 96 pontiac grand am. the car starts sometimes and not others. and when it does sstart it is very rough. the engine was just replaced. could the crankshaft position...

the crank sensor will cause intermitent dieing while driving and a no start,,,common gm issue,a p0355 is for the crsankshaft position sensor performance,,or lack there of performance really, lol replace the crank sensor,,it will not cause a rough running though it will either run or not with a bad sensor, you might have 2 issues but i know the p0355 is a bad crank sensor

'00 Grand Am dies when the gas is pushed to hard or when stopping

Either your fuel pump is getting weak or your lock up converter isn't disengaging. Simply unplug the square 4 prong plug on the side of the transmission and this will disable the locking mechanism of the converter. Don't worry the car will not even know it's disconnected. It will NOT drive any different.
