Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially

cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

I have an 89 Prelude Si 2.0 the speedo has quit working. I would love to install an new cable, but I can't even find where it comes out of the trans or goes into the firewall Can you help?

On this model the cable will run under the dash, along the console and down to the top of the transmission. You should be able to see it if you remove the top fo the center console.

1989 honda prelude miles turn fine speed arm dont move whats the name of the mogule and where is it

If the miles turn fine and the speed arm doesnt move you have a problem with the tachometer this is refeered to as RPM,This get is signal directly at the ignition negaive part if the coil, If the connection at the coil is in good order a RPM gauge or Tachometer will be your solution

My car over heafs when stuck in traffic. It's a Honda Prelude 89 model.

make sure you cooling fan is coming on (this should when the temp guage starts to climb) and also make sure the temp sensor that turns it on/off is good. You could also have low coolant or bad thermostat (the wrong mix of coolant) or oher major mechanical issues but start with the fan and coolant level/mix

S3 flashing speedameter not working

Got the same problem on my 91 prelude..it's probably a loose /broken speedometer cable or a bad speed sensor (if electronic). I tried to find this sensor but could not see any cables running to the top of the trans.

1990 2.1 engine swap

Well, the engine requires backpressure and a ventway for the exhaust; however it shouldn't be causing that.

The temp is explained simply by the speed of the engine, that's a really high RPM for no load and it's gonna head up quickly. Try seeing if you can adjust the throttle itself and see if that's incorrect somehow. I'm not sure on the prelude but I believe the cable is adjustable.

The only things holding the engine from going to such an RPM is the throttle itself. If it's opened to far the RPM will rise by giving the engine more air/fuel through the intake. So make sure that throttle is closing. I believe it should just about be completely shut on that car. I think it's only about 1/8th inch gap or somewhere close to that. I'm not positive on that and you'll have to work with it to find it.

If you can't adjust your cable, try disconnecting the cable completely and see if the throttle closes. If so the RPM should go down to an idle or somewhere close for you. Hope this helps bud!
