if your saying that your low oil pressure light is coming on (or flickering) at engine idle , but goes out when engine is above idle (going along) this is sure sign you have a problem in your engines oil pressure system :
serious !~
some common reasons for this to occur are:
worn out engine parts allowing oil to leak out and not lube parts properly (hi engine miles)
low oil level -not enough oil inside engine to get pumped around proper
restriction in oil system - blockage in oil passageways even oil filter will count (hi miles)
Why does my oil pressure light came on when I stop?
Low pressure means there either isn't enough oil in the system or the oil pump isn't circulating enough oil to keep the critical bearing and friction surfaces lubricated. If the light comes on while at speed, do your best to pull off the road quickly, turn the engine off, and investigate the problem to avoid damage.
Did the mechanic drive the truck with a mechanical gauge to check the pressure ? The engine bearings or oil pump could be worn enough to allow pressure to drop at idle after it warms up.
This may mean engine wear or bad oil pump. I would have the oil pressure tested to see if its a shot some where or if the pressure is really low, this is done by removing the sensor and installing a gauge and driving the car to see if the pressure is low, if the pressure is low then more checking is neede to see why,you may have worn engine bearings or bad oil pump. depending on the mileage it may be smarter to replace the engine, not knowing what internal damage has been done already. good day.
It sounds like your engine is low on oil. When you get home, turn your engine off, wait 5 minutes, the pull the dipstick and wipe it clean and re-insert fully, then pull the dipstick out again and look at the end of it; you will see the recommended level etched into the dipstick, if the oil level shows low (and it's a good bet it will), you need to add oil...and never use that shop again.
If the level is normal, the oil pressure sender may be faulty...ask your mechanic to check it and replace it if necessary.
engine oil pressure may be low remove oil pressure sending unit and install a pressure gauge check for pressure while warm if pressure is ok replace oil pressure sending unit oil pressure at idle should be between 5-15 psi at min
MY 2002 RAINIER DOES THE SAME THING I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY. I NEED TO CLEAN IT OR REPLACE IT. I HAVE THE 4.2 AND YOU CAN GET ONE FOR $200 PLUS SHIPPING. THE THROTTLE BODY STARVES THE CAR FOR AIR CAUSING THE IDLE, AND SHUT DOWN PROBLEMS. I AM GOING TO TRY IT THIS WEEKEND.
would that also cause metal flakes in the oil? we had the oil changed and put 20-30 wight in it and they said they found metal in the oil.
