SOURCE: replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

The five volt reference circuit .

The 4X camshaft position (CMP) sensor circuits consist of an engine control module (ECM) supplied 5-volt reference circuit, low reference circuit, and an output signal circuit. The CMP sensor is an internally magnetic biased digital output integrated circuit sensing device. The sensor detects magnetic flux changes of the teeth and slots of a 4-tooth reluctor wheel attached to the camshaft. As each reluctor wheel tooth rotates past the CMP sensor, the resulting change in the magnetic field is used by the sensor electronics to produce a digital output pulse. The sensor returns a digital ON/OFF DC voltage pulse of varying frequency, with 4 varying width output pulses per camshaft revolution that represent an image of the camshaft reluctor wheel. The frequency of the CMP sensor output depends on the velocity of the camshaft. The ECM decodes the narrow and wide tooth pattern to identify camshaft position. This information is then used to determine the optimum ignition and injection points of the engine. The ECM also uses CMP sensor output information to determine the camshaft relative position to the crankshaft, to control camshaft phasing, and for limp-home operation.

yes
the cam shaft position sensor has to report to the ECM that the camshafts are turning
it it doesn't get that report then the ECM shuts of spark and injector action

Before you replace a part you may or may not need . Why ? What code ? Does the vehicle run ? There has been a lot of confusion on these vehicles with variable valve timing , mixing up cam sensors with camshaft actuators

The presence of DTCs P0008 and P0009 along with P0016, P0017, P0018, and P0019 indicates a possible condition with the primary timing chain and the alignment between both intermediate sprockets and the crankshaft. Or, the crankshaft reluctor wheel has moved and is no longer referenced to top dead center (TDC).

Observe the scan tool CMP Desired, Actual, and Angle Variance parameters before a DTC sets. This may help to isolate whether a condition is specific to one camshaft, one bank, or caused by a condition with the primary crankshaft timing.

I'm sorry but when dealing with these problems your best bet is to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop , I have never see a DIY'ER correct the problem with these , an in the end always end up taking it to the dealer .

I would suggest replacing the camshaft position sensor. When the sensor fails it can cause changes in fuel system that the computer can detect. So I suspect once the camshaft sensor ivreplaced that the P1701 code will be gone.

Code p0340


Code 340 is for a problem with the cam sensor signal going back to the computer. Since you replaced the sensor and the problem continued, chances are the real problem is in the wiring harness or the object on the camshaft the sensor uses as a reference point.
Unplugging the sensor makes the computer use a known good signal or value in place of the sensor.

P0340 FORD Description The Camshaft Position Sensor is an electronic device used in an engine to record the rate at which the camshaft is spinning. This information is used by the Engine Control Module(ECM) to control ignition and fuel injection. The camshaft position sensor senses the retraction of camshaft (intake) to identify a particular cylinder. The camshaft position sensor senses the piston position. The sensor system consists of a rotating part, typically a disc, as well as a static part, the actual sensor.

When the engine is running, the high and low parts of the teeth cause the gap with the sensor to change. The changing gap causes the magnetic field near the sensor to change. The change in the magnetic field cause the voltage from the sensor to change.

When the crankshaft position sensor (POS) system becomes inoperative, the camshaft position sensor provides various controls of engine parts instead, utilizing timing of cylinder identification signals.
P0430, main catalyst is worn out.

The camshaft position sensor is located at the front of the cylinder head under the timing belt cover. On 2.0L models, the camshaft position sensor is located behind the camshaft sprocket and is equipped with a pigtail lead and a remote connector. On 1.8L turbo models, the camshaft position sensor is located at the front of the intake camshaft. check the terminals in the connector and the wires leading to the sensor for looseness and breaks. Repair as required.

Before checking the camshaft position sensor, check the voltage supply and ground circuits from the ECM. Dosconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor and connect a voltmeter to terminals 1 and 3 at the harness connector from the camshaft position sensor and connect a voltmeter to terminals 1 and 3 at the harness connector. Turn the ignition key On - the voltage should read approximately 5.0 volts. If the voltage is incorrect, check the wiring from the camshaft position sensor to the ECM. If the circuits are good, have the ECM checked at a dealer service department or other properly equipped repair facility.

To check the camshaft position sensor operation, reconnect hte connector to the camshaft position sensor and using a suitable probe, backprobe terminal no. 2 of the camshaft position sensor connector. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the probe and the negative lead to a good engine ground point. Turn the ignition key On. Rotate the engine slowly with a breaker bar and socket attached to the crankshaft pulley center bolt while watching the meter. The voltage should fluctuate between zero volts and 10.0 volts as the vanes in the reluctor wheel past the sensor. If the test results are incorrect, replace the camshaft position sensor. Note: Rotate the engine slowly through at least two complete revolutions. Removing the spark plugs from the engine will make the crankshaft much easier to turn. Warning: If you remove the spark plugs, unplug the primary (low voltage) electrical connector(s) from the ignition coil(s) to disable the ignition system
