You need to change the engine temperature sensor (cooling fluid temperature sensor) !

Hi Reggie, I'm glad to help. TWO things I want you to check. ONE: You have changed out a lot of stuff, so you may have air trapped in the cooling system, you'll need to remove the radiator cap and let it run until your at operating temperture, while watching to make sure it doesn't overheat on your of-course. If after running the engine say 30 minutes and topping off the coolant if needed, it still runs hot. Move on to: TWO: If you have the electric fan, some do, some don't. If it is electric make sure the fan is coming on, if it doesn't come on then you have found your problem, replace the fan assembly. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Reggie!

If you have a viscous fan hub then have it replaced as it is not drawing air through the radiator at idle or slow speed (crawling traffic). Check that are no air locks in the system as they will cause heating problems.

Did the engine overheat before the water pump was replaced? If so, you may have a warped cylinder head and/or blown head gasket.

Was the radiator full of rusty-colored liquid before you flushed it? If so, your radiator is probably restricted with rust deposits in the cooling tubes. Flushing WILL NOT get this stuff out. The radiator MUST be replaced if this is the case. Your heater core is probably not in real good shape either, so you should be expecting some heating problems this winter.

If the above is not the correct answer, then you should check to make sure the temperature gauge is not "LYING" to you. This could be caused by a defective gauge, a bad temperature sending unit, or faulty wiring.

The way to check this is with a scan tool that can read engine data and an infrared thermometer. While reading the coolant temperature data from the computer, check the cylinder head temperature with the infrared thermomometer. The readings you get should be within 5 degrees (F) of each other. If the computer data does not match the thermometer within the 5 degrees, then the sending unit for the computer should be replaced.

Then look at the gauge to see if the gauge reading is appropriate to the temperature readings that you took. Normal operating temperature is between 190 and 230 degrees. This should place the gauge at slightly to the right of center to about 5/8ths of the way to HOT. If the readings you took are OK and the gauge is reading higher than this, then you should try replacing the temperature sending unit for the gauge and see if that fixes the problem.

Please note that there are TWO temp sending units: One for the gauge and one for the computer.

Most overheating problems are caused by a stuck closed thermostat, if it has already been replaced the next common cause is a clogged radiator, have it checked at a REAPIR SHOP OR RADIATOR SHOP IF YOU REMOVE IT YOURSELF

I have a 2001 1.8 lx mondeo.The temp gauge moves to the middle position when I drive around town, but when I go onto a duel carriageway or motorway the gauge drops back to the cold end, whats going on


First thing comes to mind is coolant level.
Temp gauge only measures temp of water...it can't read air temp.
If there's an air bubble that gets to the temp gage...you will indicate a lower temp.
I'd check for leaks...a water pump just starting to weep can cause up / down readings.

After that I'd look at the thermostat.
An experiment to try:
Prior to getting on the motorway, slide a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and see if temp stays up.
I had a thermostat break in half once in winter...I had to do this trick to get enough heat to run my defrost....but running around in local traffic, it seemed to work fine.

If your problem was just the opposite...I'd be sending you to the lower radiator hose.

Is the engine actually over heating or just the gauge giving incorrect readings?? The stepper motor in the console's temp gauge could be defective. Have someone with a laser heat gun check the temp of the engine around the thermostat to find the correct temp.

1996 engine coolant problem


you can open the radiator cap before starting your engine and let it worms up and you can see by looking in to the rad if you have circulation maybe you will have to rev engine just a little if the new thermostat work it will circulate godd and check to make sure fan does come on new sensors but fan may be the problem be cautious as it gets hot . and also make sure there is no air in the system with the cap off and little rev if air is present it should come out good luck
