Question about Jaguar XJ8
At startup, the car typically will not engage in gear without feathering the trottle, which results in the transmission dropping into "Limp Mode." At this point the car is diveable, but you are stuck in either 3rd or 4th gear. Local analysis indicated a torque related issue, but trying to narrow it down to reach a fix has proven difficult. Help please!
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I've had the same problem on my 2001. It turned out to be the battery. Apparently the voltage had dropped to the point that the computer began to malfunction. I'd first go to a battery shop and have it checked under load before looking for other solutions.

SOURCE: limp in mode
Your shift control computer is getting a bad sensor value. So either a shift control sensor has gone bad, or there is a problem with your transmission. Either take it to a mechanic or buy a scan tool so you can find out the exact nature of the problem if you're going to attempt to fix this yourself.

MCARTER859: check the connections where the transmission harness and engine room harness come together. Unplug them and reconnect them I have run into more than one case with the same symptoms as yours which ended up being nothing more than poor connections.

yes its in limp mode. You will need a diagnostic scanner to continue. No way to know what component failed or what code is stored without it.
