DISTRIBUTOR WILL NOT GO IN FLUSH IN THE CAM


Hi,if I was you I would put the distributor in the only way it will fit.
as long as you have got the valve and crank timing gear setup correctly you cant do eny damage.if you have set the valve and crank so when you turn the crank twice from tdc mark and the marks line up then you can sort out the ignition timing out after.

What is the course of late firing


Late firing or retardant ignition is the condition caused by incorrect ignition timing. Ignition timing is a setpoint established by the engineers as the optimum setting for ignition efficiency. This setting is a few degrees before TDC or top dead center. TDC is the point on 360 degree scale at 0 . This indicates the #1 cylinder has its piston travel at the top
Limit of the stroke. If your condition has firing occurring after the few degrees Before TDC then this can be called late firing. You have a timing issue.

Where should the crank pulleys mark stand for tdc.i got the timing on the flywheel spot on and number 1 valves are firing but the car does nt perform as it should.please help.its a 1987 vw passat cli 2,2


The marks on the pulley or flywheel will be TDC for top dead centre . correct ignition point is before TDC normally around 10 degrees and there will be a mark on the housing before the TDC point. You have effectively timed the spark in a retard situation and you need to get it advanced

When I bring the piston to TDC should I see which way the rotor in the distributor is pointing to make sure it is pointing at the #1 plug before moving the distributor


Sorry, but there seems to be something confusing here. With the engine at TDC and the rotor pointing at the #1 position, moving the distributor would achieve nothing more than throwing the timing out. To do ignition timing you heed a timing light and the engine running, then you use the timing marks on the pulley and the front case to set the distributor to the correct number of degrees before TDC as per the manual.

The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on TDC. (Top Dead Center) This "Static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at TDC.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing (usually has a #6 for 6 cylinder engines or a #8 for 8 cylinder engines) indicating the number one TDC alignment position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one TDC alignment mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to and aligned with the TDC alignment mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be "Static" timed. (The more precise that you are aligning the TDC alignment mark with the ignition rotor the better the engine will run, and it will be less likely that there will be a camshaft to crankshaft correlation problem)

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

Here is a firing order diagram to also help assist you.

Some distributors have the hold down bracket secured onto the distributor housing and the distributor can not be turned into alignment and then tightened down into that position, and these distributors will only fit into the engine and correctly align on "Static" timing one certain way, and when it is correct the distributor hold down bracket bolt can be installed and the TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing will remain properly aligned with the ignition rotor.

take the timing belt off reset the crank at 0 with # 1 piston at TDC ensure that both cams are up at twelve 'oclock with belt on, when the tension is released and the tensioner is tightened turn the crank atleast 360 degrees and ensure that the timing does not shift before starting engine

position of distributor = ignition timing
position of cam in relation to crank = cam timing

You should be able to from before to past the red mark while the distributor is within the the limits of travel the bolts that hold it on allow. If you cant -- then the most likely reason is that your cam timing is off by a tooth.

before you can set ignition timing, you need to have the correct cam timing.
no amount of ignition timing can compensate for incorrect cam timing.
You need to make sure that when the cam is at TDC, so is the crank.
until you have this resolved the marks on you crank pulley are meaningless, in other words you will not be able to set the ignition timing.

#1 tdc it is 10 degrees BTDC you must remove the shorting plug at the dist before setting
