Not sure what the other wires go to, maybe the air bag, regardless all instruments are working on the '89.

SOURCE: I have a 1996 VW Jetta, odomoter and speedometer

Either you have a broken wire some where from the speed sensor to the cluster or you have connector at fault, the one which hookup the dash cluster to the main wire bundel. Check the connector, maybe a pushed back pin !!

SOURCE: 2006 Volkswagen Jetta Ignition Lock Problem

I know this is a little late, but I just encountered the same problem with a 2005.5 jetta tdi. Went to put key in ignition and encountered a white plastic tumbler(?) blocking the keyhole. Car was parked, tires were straight and steering wheel was locked. Tried moving wheel up, down, left and right and also tried applying a small amount of oil thinking something was just stuck. Did what I could and finally called VW roadside assistance. Local dealer took a look this afternoon and notified me that the ignition switch is faulty and they have to order a new one from Germany which will take 2 weeks to arrive. Plus side, the part and labor will be covered under CPO warranty, but of course, the warranty doesn't cover a rental car for the two weeks this one will be out of commission.

Immobilizer active reset on 2006 volkswagon passat

First of all you need to programm all ignition keys using suitable diagnostic equipment (VAS, VAG-Com) connected to the data link connector of the car.

You have an electronic immobilizer key recognition problem. Now your key chip is not recognized by the transponder antenna fitted on the ignition switch barrel.

tdisline_775.jpg

This warning lamp indicates that the engine is locked by the immobilizer system, and the engine start sequence must be repeat again.

From year 1995 in Audi-VW (VAG) cars is used engine immobilizer. The VAG group immobilizer system consists of an immobilizer ECU which controls the recognition of keys and the Engine Management ECU system. Immobilizer is activated when the ignition key is removed and, together with the engine control unit, largely prevents unauthorized starting of the engine. The system uses a transmitter and receiver unit in the ignition key (transponder). Whenever an attempt is made to start the engine, it transmits a new code to the car's electronics. The immobilizing is only cancelled and car motor electronic receives permission to start engine if the key sends a right authorization code.

Oil light on when key removed no response when key is turned batterie full

Need year and model to know what might be exact problem.

If a late model...ie: 2000yr and up, the cluster is likely problem.
All VW cars have a pattern failure with the electrical part of the ignition switch.

My 2006 C280 was due for service B , and I just did the oil change only. How can I reset service B message on the car computer ?

Reset process should be listed in the owners manual.

Should be something like turn car to on(not running) press trip button twice, turn to off and hold trip button till it resets.

Electronic immobilizer

most likely cause is the gauge cluster, this will have to be tested and service by your local dealership because the dash cluster and keys have to be coded. I have seen the immobilizer loose it's coding for apearantly no reason. therefore have them recode cluster and see if problem goes away, if it doesn't the gauge cluster will have to be replaced.

VW Passat 2006 service now

2 options depending on your displays .

Press and hold the service wrench button with the ignition off. While still holding the button, turn your ignition to "on" (but don't start the car). Press the Min clock button and then release the wrench button.

With key off press and hold the 0.0 button on the cluster. With your other hand turn the key to the on position , while still holding 0.0 button, press the minute button for 1 second and you will see the service reset.

cheers

Smart key

Montie,

The problem that you have in this situation is that all smart keys are registered with a unique identification code specifically coded to your vehicle. So, if you purchased the key from a junk yard for a different vehicle and VW would not code that key for your vehicle it will not work on your vehicle. There is no other way to make that key work for your vehicle if VW will not program it to work for your vehicle. Most locksmiths do not even have access to the codes needed to reprogram the VW key fobs.

My suggestion would be to fork over the $50-$100 bucks for a new key fob from VW. They will most likely need your PIN that is assigned to your vehicle. They can also find this information out by running your VIN number or hooking your car up to the diagnostics system at VW.

Hope this info helps.
