Coolant in oil

Changed water pump, both cam, front crank seal and valve cover gaskets on this vehicle. When filling radiator with coolant, it fills up the engine gurgling into the head. What would cause this to happen? Water pump does not seem to be leaking.

Some place the coolant flows is through an area with oil in it, and the 2 mix, this indicates the gasket is defective or the part is cracked or otherwise not sealing. Cylinder head gaskets can cause this and often do.

    I have just never heard coolant gurgle into a head like that. I changed the water pump and parts listed, As i was filling up the radiator the engine was filling up with the coolant, hearing the gurgling sound in the head. I believe also it is the head gasket, but I am second guessing myself on this because my job is at risk.

    Yes just coolant flowing into engine hearing the gurgling sound in the head and when drain the oil pan it is just coolant and oil mix

    Have a shop use a gas analyzer and check the coolant tank for hydrocarbons, if present the head gasket is leaking. Also pressurize the cooling system and see if it holds pressure cold. You can buy a pressure tester from Harbor freight tools fairly cheap.

    it dont hold pressure cold it fills the engine up fluently, vehicle off...fill radiator...and the block fills up with coolant freely hearing that gurgling sound in the head

My Alero is overheating, and pushing the coolant out the surg tank, my brother said water pump, changed. then said thermostat, changed. then said radiator clogged, flushed. still doing the same thing?


Do fans come on , if not it is the $8 dollar temp sensor or the fan fuse or the fan motor.
If you have heat from the heater and if radiator gets hot then it is neither the raditor or the water pump nor the thermostat as neither heater or radiator would get hot
because no water would be moving in the system.

OIL LEAKAGE CAUSES


Where to begin? There are several things and areas that can leak oil or cause an oil leak. Super easy first, when changing the oil if it becomes overfilled it can seep from the seals, the dipstick, out the fill tube, through the gaskets, etc. This can be a permanent issue even if it only happened once or twice and the only repair is to replace the affected seals. Several other options for a variety of vehicles are as follows. Rear main, timing cover, crank seals, cam seals, valve covers, oil pan gasket or puncture, crank sensor, oil pressure gauge fittings, water pump mount (engine specific), head gasket, etc. Also transmission or transfer oil can push past bad seals or gaskets and bad transfer bearings can promote leakage in some models. The amount of oil leaked and location are key to identifying causes. If you are a "do it yourselfer" I recommend putting the vehicle up on ramps, wiping off excess oil with a cloth, then pressure washing (with degreaser for embedded road grime etc.) After the vehicle completely dries slide underneath with a very bright drop light and inspect thoroughly for drips or seepage. Always use proper safety precautions! If you cannot find the leak, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes then shut it off, allow it to cool and re-inspect. There are several vacuum, gasket, valves, bent cam, and many other internal issues that can cause leaks as well. WHAT ARE THE TORQUE SPECS FOR A WATER PUMP ON A 2003 CHEVY MALIBU


Water Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old. 2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Detach the Oxygen (O2) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Properly drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing for a more complete coolant drain.
  4. Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  6. Remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Break the manifold-to-exhaust pipe spring loaded bolts loose using a 13mm box wrench.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle. NOTE: It is necessary to relieve the spring pressure from 1 bolt prior to removing the second bolt. If the spring pressure is not relieved, it will cause the exhaust pipe to twist and bind up the bolt as it is removed.
  9. Unfasten the two radiator outlet pipe-to-water pump cover bolts.
  10. Remove the manifold to exhaust pipe bolts from the exhaust pipe flange as follows:
    1. Unscrew either bolt clockwise 4 turns.
    2. Remove the other bolt.
    3. Remove the first bolt. NOTE: DO NOT rotate the flex coupling more than 4°or damage may occur.
  11. Pull down and back on the exhaust pipe to disengage it from the exhaust manifold bolts.
  12. Remove the radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan and transaxle. Leave the lower radiator hose attached and pull down on the outlet pipe to remove it from the water pump. Leave the radiator outlet pipe hang.
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  14. Unfasten the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head retaining nuts, then remove the exhaust manifold, seals and gaskets.
  15. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner. For details, please refer to the procedure located later in this section.
  16. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly, then separate the two pieces. Fig. 1: Water pump and cover mounting - 2.4L engine 87953070.gif
    To install:
  17. Thoroughly clean and dry all mounting surfaces, bolts and bolt holes. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the cover and tighten the bolts finger-tight.
  18. Lubricate the splines of the water pump with clean grease and install the assembly to the engine using new gaskets. Install the mounting bolts and nuts finger-tight.
  19. Lubricate the radiator outlet pipe O-ring with antifreeze and slide the pipe onto the water pump cover. Install the bolts finger-tight.
  20. With all gaps closed, tighten the bolts, in the following sequence, to the proper values:
    1. Pump assembly-to-chain housing nuts:19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    2. Pump cover-to-pump assembly: 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Cover-to-block, bottom bolt first: 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4. Radiator outlet pipe assembly-to-pump cover: 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  21. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold. Make sure to following the tightening sequence and torque specifications given in the exhaust manifold procedure located in this section.
  22. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  23. Index the exhaust manifold bolts into the exhaust pipe flange.
  24. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Install the exhaust pipe flange bolts evenly and gradually to avoid binding. Turn the bolts in until fully seated.
  25. Connect the radiator outlet pipe to the transaxle and oil pan.
  26. Install the timing chain tensioner and front cover.
  27. Install the lower heat shield.
  28. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  29. Fasten the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  30. Tighten the manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts to specification.
  31. Install the upper heat shield.
  32. Attach the oxygen sensor connector.
  33. Fill the radiator with coolant until it comes out the heater hose outlet at the thermostat housing. Then connect the heater hose. Leave the radiator cap off.
  34. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Run the vehicle until the thermostat opens, fill the radiator and recovery tank to their proper levels, then turn the engine OFF.
  35. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level, then install the radiator cap.
3.1L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove the serpentine belt.
  5. Unfasten the water pump pulley bolts, then remove the pulley.
  6. Remove the five water pump mounting bolts, then remove the water pump. To install: Fig. 2: View of the water pump mounting and bolt tightening specifications - 3.1L engine shown 86883115.gif

  7. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
  8. Apply a thin bead of sealer around the outside edge of the water pump along the gasket sealing area, then install the gasket onto the water pump.
  9. Position the water pump on the engine, then tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10. Install the water pump pulley and finger-tighten the pulley bolts.
  11. Install the serpentine belt.
  12. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Let the engine run until it reaches normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and coolant level. Add coolant, if necessary, then turn the engine OFF.

How to replace water pump 2003 alero. 3400 engine.


Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold..
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Right front wheel and tire assembly.
    • Right front fender liner. chevy_cav_02-04_accescover.gif

    • Access plate on the water pump sprocket from the timing cover.
  6. Install J 43651 water pump sprocket holder or equivalent to the water pump sprocket.
  7. Use the access plate bolts to attach J43651 to the engine front cover.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bolts that secure the sprocket to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine front cover to the water pump.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump. chevy_cav_02-04_wp.gif

    • 2 Bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Water pump.
To Install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the hub to align the water pump sprocket.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump.
    • 2 bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump.
    • Front cover bolt and the bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft lbs (20 Nm).
    • 2 of the bolts that secure the water pump sprocket to the water pump.
  3. Remove the threaded stud.
  4. Install the last bolt.
    • Tighten the bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
  5. Remove J 43651.
  6. Install the access plate on the water pump sprocket to the timing cover.
  7. Install the access plate bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 18 in lbs (10 Nm).
  8. Install the front fender liner.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the coolant intake pipe as follows:
    1. Remove the coolant inlet pipe bolts.
    2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the engine splash shield.
    4. Remove the bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block brace and remove the brace.
    5. Remove the radiator hose from the coolant inlet pipe.
    6. Remove the coolant inlet pipe to oil pan bolt.
    7. Remove the coolant inlet pipe, thermostat and seal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner.
  8. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts.
  11. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly. Separate the two pieces after removal.
  12. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
  2. Install and hand tighten the pump cover mounting bolts.
  3. Install water pump cover assembly.
  4. Install and hand tighten the cover-to-block mounting bolts.
  5. Install and hand tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
    • Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing mounting nuts to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-water pump mounting bolts to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-engine block bolts starting with the bottom bolt first to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  6. Install the heater hose to the water pump pipe.
  7. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the oil level indicator and tube.
  9. Connect the brake vacuum tube to the cam housing.
  10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  11. Install the catalytic converter.
  12. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
    • Tighten the inlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft lb (26 Nm). Tighten the coolant inlet pipe bolt to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
  13. Install the timing chain and tensioner.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  16. Fill cooling system and check the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
    • Water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
    • Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump gasket and pump.
    • Water pump bolts.
      1. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Water pump pulley and bolt until snug.
    • Drive belt.
  2. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

How do you time a 350 gmc motor


4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L Engines
    • Timing mark alignment-4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L 9308kg61.gif

    • Locate the camshaft sprocket alignment mark in the 6 o'clock position and install the camshaft sprocket and timing chain
    • Camshaft sprocket bolts and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts;
      1. Torque to: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
    • Oil pump
    NOTE: Do not lubricate the oil seal sealing surface.
  1. Lubricate the outer edge of the oil seal with clean engine oil.
  2. Lubricate the front cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil.
  3. Install the crankshaft front oil seal with a suitable seal installer. NOTE: Do not apply any type sealant to the front cover gasket (unless specified). Special tools are used to properly align the engine front cover at the oil pan surface and to center the crankshaft front oil seal.
  4. Install the front cover gasket, cover, and bolts onto the engine.
  5. Install the front cover-to-oil pan bolts and do not overtighten.
  6. Tighten the cover bolts finger tight and do not overtighten. J41480 installation-4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L 9308kg59.gif

  7. Start the J41480 or other suitable tool to front cover bolts but don’t tighten the bolts yet. NOTE: Align the tapered legs of the tool with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.

  8. Install tool J41476 or other suitable tool.
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt by hand until snug but do not overtighten.
  10. Tighten the J41480 bolts and front cover bolts;
    • Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  11. Remove the tools. NOTE: Place a straight edge across the engine block and front cover oil pan sealing surfaces. Avoid contact with the portion of the gasket that protrudes into the oil pan surface. Insert a feeler gauge between the front cover and the straight edge tool. The cover must be flush with the oil pan surface or no more than 0.5 mm (0.02 in) below flush. If the front cover-to-engine block oil pan surface alignment is not within specifications, repeat the cover alignment procedure. If the correct front cover-to-engine block alignment cannot be obtained, replace the front cover.
  12. Snug the oil pan-to-cover bolts in order to position the cover at the pan rail.
  13. Tighten the oil pan-to-front cover bolts;
    • Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14. Tighten the front cover bolts;
    • Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  15. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt (See: Crankshaft Damper).
  16. Install the water pump (See: Water Pump).
  17. Fill the engine to the proper level with oil.
  18. Fill the engine to the proper level with coolant.
  19. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs.
6.6L Engine To Remove:
NOTE: The 6.6L engine uses gears in place of a timing chain. For removal and installation, please see the Camshaft and Lifters procedure. This procedure covers the removal of the front cover and seal.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the upper intake manifold sight shield as follows:
    • Remove the retaining bolt in the front of the shield
    • Lift up on the front of the shield, then lift the shield off the rear bracket
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cables
    • Right front wheel
    • Right front fender splash shield
    • Upper fan shroud
    • Fan clutch (See: Engine Fan and Clutch)
    • Drive belt
    • Oil dipstick tube
    • Thermostat housing crossover
    • Crankshaft damper (See: Crankshaft Damper)
    • Crankshaft front oil seal
    • Water pump (See: Water Pump)
    • Camshaft sensor electrical connector
    • Camshaft sensor bolt and sensor
    • Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector, bolt and sensor
    • CKP sensor spacer bolts and spacer
    • 5 bolts securing the upper oil pan to the front cover
    • Bracket bolts and the bracket for the turbocharger outlet coolant pipe
    • Engine front cover bolts
    • Use a suitable seal cutter to separate the front cover from the cylinder block and upper oil pan NOTE: Do not bend the turbocharger outlet pipe.
    • O-ring from the front cover Engine front cover-6.6L engine 9348ng32.gif

    • Oil pressure relief valve from the front cover
To Install:
  1. Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Oil pressure relief valve with a new O-ring and tighten the valve
      1. Torque to: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
  3. Apply a 1/8 in. (2-3mm) wide to 1/16 in. (0.5-1.5mm) high bead of sealant to the front cover sealing surfaces to the engine block and oil pan.
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • New front cover O-ring after lubricating it with engine oil
    • Front cover and bolts and tighten the front cover bolts
      1. Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
    • Upper oil pan-to-front cover bolts and tighten the bolts
      1. Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
    • Turbocharger coolant outlet pipe bracket and bolts and tighten the bolts
      1. Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    • Camshaft sensor and bolt and tighten the bolt
      1. Torque to: 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
    • Camshaft sensor connector NOTE: The CKP sensor spacers are machined with different timing positions. If you have to replace a spacer, make sure it has the same part number.
    • CKP sensor spacer and spacer bolts and tighten the bolts
      1. Torque to: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    • CKP sensor and bolt and tighten the bolt
      1. Torque to: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
    • Water pump (See: Water Pump)
    • Crankshaft front oil seal
    • Crankshaft damper (See: Crankshaft Damper)
    • Thermostat housing crossover
    • Oil fill tube
    • Drive belt
    • Upper fan shroud
    • Right front fender splash shield and wheel

  5. Refill the cooling system with the proper type and quantity of antifreeze.

Oil gage goes to zero when i stop but goes up when i take off also using lots of oil but no smoke out the exhaust does this mean my oil pump is going bad 1996 isuzu rodeo


May mean yor engine is burning the oil or you have a leak.
Look in coolant recovery tank or radiator when vehicle is cold and is if coolant is milky or there is oil in it.If either of these conditions are there you may have a bad head gasket.
If none of these conditions are there then have the vehicle inspected for oil leaks.
Arears to focus on: Rear main seal,oil pan,valve cover gaskets, cam and crank shaft seals, oil pump seal and gasket.

How do i change a water pump in a 97 grand am with a 2.4 litre engine


2.4L Engine
See Figure 3
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  3. Disconnect the oxygen sensor wiring.
  4. Remove the upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Raise and safely support the front end of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  6. Remove the exhaust manifold brace bolt.
  7. Unbolt and remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  8. Break loose the manifold-to-exhaust pipe spring loaded nuts.
  9. Unbolt the radiator outlet pipe assembly from the water pump cover.
  10. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold.
  11. Pull down and back on the exhaust pipe to disengage it from the exhaust manifold bolts.
Do not rotate the flex coupling more than 4°. this could damage the component.
  1. Separate the radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan and transaxle.
    1. On manual transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold brace.

  2. Next, leave the lower radiator hose attached and pull down on the outlet pipe to detach it from the water pump. Allow the outlet pipe to hang.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Remove the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head nuts.
  5. Extract the manifold, seals and gaskets.
  6. Remove the timing chain cover. Refer to the procedure later on in this section.
  7. Remove the timing chain tensioner. Refer to Timing Chain removal later in this section.
  8. Unbolt the water pump from the cylinder block.
  9. Extract the pump assembly-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover assembly.
  11. Separate the pump from the cover.
  12. Clean all mating surfaces of gaskets and sealant materials.

To install:
Prior to installing the water pump, read the entire procedure. Pay special attention to the tightening sequence to avoid component damage and ensure a proper seal.
  1. Attach the water pump to the cover and hand-tighten the components.
  2. Lubricate the splines of the water pump drive with chassis grease or equivalent, then install the pump and cover assembly. Hand tighten the cover-to-block bolts.
  3. Install the pump-to-chain housing nuts and hand-tighten.
  4. Lubricate the O-ring on the radiator outlet pipe with an anti-freeze solution and slide the pipe into the water pump cover, install and hand-tighten the bolts.
  5. With the specified gaps, tighten in sequence as follows:
    1. Pump assembly-to-chain housing nuts
    2. Pump cover-to-pump assembly
    3. Cover-to-block, bottom bolt first
    4. Radiator outlet pipe assembly-to-cover

  6. Install the exhaust manifold using new gaskets.
  7. Install the manifold-to-cylinder head nuts, follow the tightening sequence and tighten to specifications.
  8. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
  9. Index the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust pipe flange bolts.
    1. Turn bolt bolts in evenly to avoid cocking the exhaust pipe and binding the bolts. Turn the bolts in until they are fully seated.

  10. Install and secure the radiator outlet pipe to the transaxle and oil pan.

On manual transaxles, install the exhaust manifold brace.
  1. Install the timing chain tensioner and chain cover.
  2. Attach the lower heat shield.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Attach the exhaust manifold brace. Tighten the manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts to specification.
  5. Attach and secure the upper heat shield.
  6. Connect the oxygen sensor wiring.
  7. Fill the radiator with coolant water mixture until it reaches the heater hose coolant outlet, then install the hose and continue to fill. This will assist with the complete cylinder block fill.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Start the engine and top off the cooling system and check for leaks.

Replacing the water pump


2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Detach the Oxygen (O2) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Properly drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing for a more complete coolant drain.
  4. Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  6. Remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Break the manifold-to-exhaust pipe spring loaded bolts loose using a 13mm box wrench.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

NOTE It is necessary to relieve the spring pressure from 1 bolt prior to removing the second bolt. If the spring pressure is not relieved, it will cause the exhaust pipe to twist and bind up the bolt as it is removed.
  1. Unfasten the two radiator outlet pipe-to-water pump cover bolts.
  2. Remove the manifold to exhaust pipe bolts from the exhaust pipe flange as follows:
    1. Unscrew either bolt clockwise 4 turns.
    2. Remove the other bolt.
    3. Remove the first bolt.

NOTE DO NOT rotate the flex coupling more than 4° or damage may occur.
  1. Pull down and back on the exhaust pipe to disengage it from the exhaust manifold bolts.
  2. Remove the radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan and transaxle. Leave the lower radiator hose attached and pull down on the outlet pipe to remove it from the water pump. Leave the radiator outlet pipe hang.
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  4. Unfasten the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head retaining nuts, then remove the exhaust manifold, seals and gaskets.
  5. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner. For details, please refer to the procedure located later in this section.
  6. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly, then separate the two pieces.

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean and dry all mounting surfaces, bolts and bolt holes. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the cover and tighten the bolts finger-tight.
  2. Lubricate the splines of the water pump with clean grease and install the assembly to the engine using new gaskets. Install the mounting bolts and nuts finger-tight.
  3. Lubricate the radiator outlet pipe O-ring with antifreeze and slide the pipe onto the water pump cover. Install the bolts finger-tight.
  4. With all gaps closed, tighten the bolts, in the following sequence, to the proper values:
    1. Pump assembly-to-chain housing nuts:19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    2. Pump cover-to-pump assembly: 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Cover-to-block, bottom bolt first: 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4. Radiator outlet pipe assembly-to-pump cover: 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  5. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold. Make sure to following the tightening sequence and torque specifications given in the exhaust manifold procedure located in this section.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Index the exhaust manifold bolts into the exhaust pipe flange.
  8. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Install the exhaust pipe flange bolts evenly and gradually to avoid binding. Turn the bolts in until fully seated.
  9. Connect the radiator outlet pipe to the transaxle and oil pan.
  10. Install the timing chain tensioner and front cover.
  11. Install the lower heat shield.
  12. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  13. Fasten the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  14. Tighten the manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts to specification.
  15. Install the upper heat shield.
  16. Attach the oxygen sensor connector.
  17. Fill the radiator with coolant until it comes out the heater hose outlet at the thermostat housing. Then connect the heater hose. Leave the radiator cap off.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Run the vehicle until the thermostat opens, fill the radiator and recovery tank to their proper levels, then turn the engine OFF.
  19. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level, then install the radiator cap.

3.1L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Loosen, but do not remove, the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove the serpentine belt.
  5. Unfasten the water pump pulley bolts, then remove the pulley.
  6. Remove the five water pump mounting bolts, then remove the water pump.
To install:

  1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Apply a thin bead of sealer around the outside edge of the water pump along the gasket sealing area, then install the gasket onto the water pump.
  3. Position the water pump on the engine, then tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Install the water pump pulley and finger-tighten the pulley bolts.
  5. Install the serpentine belt.
  6. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Let the engine run until it reaches normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and coolant level. Add coolant, if necessary, then turn the engine OFF.

How to replace the water pump on 1993 oldsmoblie achieva.


2.4 enigine is the harder of the 3 enignes. it will need a timing chain to be removed and a coolant tube in the back of the engine to be removed. this job on the book calls for almost 7 hours.

if its 3.3 or 3100 its alot easier.

3100 is just 4 10mm pulley bolts and 5 or 6 small 8mm water pump bolts.

3.3 is alittle more work, but same concept as 3100 engine. more owkr only cause its in a tighter area.

Location of water pump in a 1999 chrysler 300m


It's on the left side (driver side). It's by the belts. You can't see the water pump from the top side.
If you want to get to the water pump you have to remove the top radiator cross member, the fan assembly, the crank pulley, the timing covers, and the timing belt.
