SOURCE: location of speed sensor on 2004 silverado automatic transmission

the speed sensor is located generally on the tailshaft housing or in other words where the driveshaft slides into transmission has a small black sensor with a couple of wires going to it. those trucks have a bad problem with the cluster going out on them though. more than likely that is going to be your problem. you have to take cluster to dealership (new one) and they have to burn the current mileage into it.

SOURCE: My 1996 S-10 Blazer will not shift sometimes and

A faulty VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or related wiring can cause both of your problems, trans and ABS. If the computer doesn't know the vehicle is moving, then it won't shift the trans. If the ABS controller sees wheel speed, but not vehicle speed, it will turn on the ABS light. The VSS is located in the rear transfer case housing. But remember, it may be the VSS, related wiring, a faulty speedo buffer (usually located in the dashboard), ECM, or even the reluctor on the transfer case output shaft. You may want to have a shop scan "data stream", or even have them diagnose the problem.

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2003 buick rendezvous

Why ? speedometer not working ? Does the vehicle shift correctly ? The VSS - vehicle speed sensor is an input to the PCM - engine computer > Speed info is sent from the PCM to the microprocessor in the instrument cluster over the class 2 serial data bus . 2003 - 2006 GM vehicles had bad step motors in the instrument cluster . Step motors control gauge position. The VSS is located on the transmission case Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Lower right rear of the engine compartment, mounted to the right side of the transaxle.

Speedometer
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the vehicle speed as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit (4000 pulses/mile), class 2 message from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. If the IPC detects a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM, the IPC uses the class 2 message from the EBCM, indicating the vehicle speed as a backup. If the speedometer reaches (108 mph) the fuel with shut-off, and it will turn back ON when the speedometer is at (106 mph). The speedometer displays either miles or kilometers as requested by the activation of the English/metric button on the driver information center (DIC). The associated indicator (km/h or mph) illuminates.

2003 Grand Marquis digital speedo only reads "0". All other displays read correctly. Could it be the speed control? If so, where exactly is it located?

The speedometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear in the transmission.

2000 GMC Jimmy 4×4 The ABS light is on, the speed odometer does not work, and it does shift out of 1st gear, if I manually put it into second gear then it will shift fine, it has a changed VSS

Did you have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?
Speedometer
The speedometer is an analog gauge that is located in the instrument cluster. The PCM/VCM receives an analog input from the vehicle speed sensor and converts it to a digital signal containing 4,000 pulses per mile (PPM) for the instrument cluster.
The PCM/VCM sends this digital output (4,000 PPM) to the instrument cluster on a designated circuit. These pulses can be measured in Hertz (Hz) using a digital multimeter (DMM) on the AC scale. The PCM/VCM calibration is matched to the final drive and tire size of each vehicle. If the final drive or tire size is changed for any reason, the PCM/VCM must be updated in order to match the new final drive or tire size. If not, the signal will not be accurate for proper speedometer/odometer operation. An incorrect signal can affect the antilock brakes and the cruise control systems.
The speedometer system consists of the instrument cluster, vehicle speed sensor (VSS), PCM/VCM and related wiring. The VSS is a permanent magnet signal generator that sends an analog signal proportional to the propeller shaft speed to the PCM/VCM. The VSS mounts to the transmission tailshaft extension housing on 2-wheel drive (2WD) models and the transfer case output shaft housing on 4-wheel drive (4WD) models.
Repairs to the instrument cluster can only be performed by an authorized instrument cluster service center. DTC P0502 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Low Input and DTC P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Intermittent in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E
- DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit in Engine Controls - 4.3L Important: If the instrument cluster is completely inoperative, refer to Instrument Cluster Inoperative .
Install a scan tool.
Raise the vehicles drive wheels. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Start the engine.
Place the transmission into drive for automatic transmission and third gear for manual transmission.
Compare the displayed vehicle speed on the Instrument Cluster with the monitored speed on the scan tool.
Does the vehicles speedometer and the scan tool both display 0 km/h (0 mph)? You really need a Factory scan tool or equivalent to check this . The VSS is an input to the PCM/VCM . engine computer . You can test with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter , for signal to engine computer .
I know most people don't like hearing this , but I suggest you take it to a ASE certified repair facility .

P0722 FAULT CODE

P0722: Transmission speed signal missing.

There is a turbine speed sensor that detects and reports the speed of the transmission shaft to the computer to help determine shift points. Sometimes this duty is shared by the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) but if your speedometer still works, then the VSS is good and you should replace the TSS (turbine speed sensor). I would guess you are either stuck in 1st gear all the time or your transmission shifts erratically.

I have reverse and first gear

I'm guessing you don't have any other gears? If your speedometer doesn't work, then you need to replace the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), if the speedometer does work, then you probably need to replace the turbine speed sensor (TSS). The transmission can't shift if it doesn't know how fast the vehicle or transmission is moving. Since you didn't way what model and engine you have I can't tell you where the VSS or TSS is located. You can buy these sensors at a local auto part store, such as Auto Zone, and they can give you the specific location of the sensors on the transmission.

I have a 1995 gmc sonoma and it won`t shift from first gear and the speedometer don`t work

You may have a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor [VSS] This sensor provides the information the speedometer needs to indicate speed and also supplies the transmission with information it needs to determine when to shift. If the signal is lost you can end up with the very symptoms you are having. It's usually located on the rear of the transmission or transfer case area. Hope this helps!

Will not shift out of 1st gear, auto trans

If the speedometer doesn't work, then it is your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and if the speedometer does work then it is your TSS (turbine speed sensor). If the computer doesn't know both the vehicle and transmission speeds, it won't shift out of 1st gear.

Speedometer wont work

Most cars have one main vehicle speed sensor (vss). The VSS in front wheel drive cars is mounted in the transmission. A gear in the tranny turns a small gear on the VSS. If a tooth of the gear on the VSS is damaged, you can get that erratic speedometer jumping like you're experiencing. A malfunctioning VSS can cause problems with shifting and with the activation of the anti-lock braking system and cruise control. Have a Transmission shop inspect your VSS and replace if necessary, if your handy with tools. you can buy the VSS and replace you self. The speed sensors on the Galant are called pulse generators and need to be replace as a set. Located outside of the transmission right on top.
Good luck!

1996 cavalier speedo quit working .now tranny will not shift of first.replaced vss sensor fluid and filter.

I'm assuming this is an automatic transmission.

It sounds as though your drive gear in the transmission or on the governor has worn out and is not longer being driven when the vehicle moves. Without the governor, the transmission will not shift and the speedometer will not work as they are both driven from the same area.
You will have to remove the governor cover ( it is the cover the VSS or PM generator mounts) and remove the governor to see if the drive gear is damaged.
Let me know what you find.
