86 dodge daytona wont start

Cranks but does not start and im getting no spark have replaced fuel pump distributor ignition coil and the main computer under the hood still wont start

The main logic module / computer is located in the passenger side kick panel under the dash. If I remember correctly that is the computer that controls the engine ignition. This could be your culprit.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Disconnect the fusible link connector for the fuel injection wiring harness. Be sure the ignition is OFF before doing this. Disconnect the cold start valve wiring harness connector. Disconnect the high tension lead (coil-to-distributor) at the distributor and hold it 0.13-0.25 in. (3.3-6.3mm) away from the cylinder head with a pair of insulated pliers and a heavy glove. When the engine is cranked, a spark should be observed. If not, check the lead and replace as necessary. If there is still no spark, go on with the following system checks.
    1. Make a check of the power supply circuit. Turn the ignition OFF. Detach the connector from the top of the IC unit. Turn the ignition ON. Measure the voltage at each terminal of the connector in turn by touching the probe of positive lead of the voltmeter to one of the terminals and touching the probe of the negative lead of the voltmeter to a ground, such as the engine. In each case, battery voltage should be indicated. If not, check all of the wiring, the ignition switch and all connectors for breaks, corrosion, discontinuity etc., then repair as necessary
    2. Check the primary windings of the ignition coil. Turn the ignition OFF. Detach the harness connector from the negative coil terminal. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the positive and negative coil terminals. If resistance is 0.84-1.02 ohms, the coil is OK; replace it if the reading is far from this range.
  2. If the power supply, circuits, wiring and coil are in good shape, check the IC unit and pick-up coil as follows:
    1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    2. Remove the distributor cap and ignition rotor.
    3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the two terminals of the pick-up coil, where they attach to the IC unit. Measure the resistance by reversing the polarity of the probes. If approximately 400 ohms are indicated, the pick-up coil is OK, but the IC unit is bad and must be replaced.

  1. If the resistance is other than 400 ohms, proceed with the following:
    1. Be certain the two pin connector to the IC unit is secure.
    2. Turn the ignition ON.
    3. Measure the voltage at the ignition coil's negative terminal.
    4. Turn the ignition OFF.
WARNINGRemove the tester probe from the coil negative terminal before switching the ignition OFF, to prevent burning out the tester.
    1. If 0 voltage is indicated, the IC unit is bad and must be replaced.
  1. If battery voltage is indicated, remove the IC unit from the distributor, by proceeding as follows:
    1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
    2. Remove the distributor cap and ignition rotor.
    3. Disconnect the harness connector from the top of the IC unit.
    4. Remove the two screws securing the IC unit to the distributor.
    5. Disconnect the two pick-up coil wires from the IC unit.
WARNINGPull the connectors free with a pair of needlenose pliers. DO NOT pull on the wires to detach the connectors.
    1. Remove the IC unit.
  1. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the pick-up coil. It should be approximately 400 ohms. If so, the pick-up coil is OK and the IC unit is bad. If the resistance is other than 400 ohms, the pick-up coil is bad and must be replaced.

if truck has a ceramic ballist resistor near and connected to coil this could be problem or the crk posistion sensor could be too, i would change ballast first if you have on your truck appx cost $10

It could be bad plugs, plug wires, a bad ground will do this as well. Check to see if it has the three main things.

Spark
Air
Fuel

Anther common problem is the crank shaft speed sensor. It will cause it to not spark and not start.

looked it up online, looks like its in the underhood fuse box but couldn't get a good diagram that shows which relay number it is. the website i use is sort of dependent on the manufacturer, apparently acura did not feel like sharing that info. hope that helps

Check the fuel pump fuse and relay, if it's OK, you have a bad fuel pump. About the no spark, could be many things

Possible distributor pick up coil located inside distributor cap It will be the black plastic piece with the wire on it. These were common to fail and cause a no spark situation

2000 dodge ram 1500 4x4 wont start. it will turn over but will not crank. we have replaced the coil and the crank sensor and it will still not work. Is also not the timing belt or the fuel pump. any ideas...


are you getting any spark from the coil and not to the plugs? if so replace the rotor button in the distributor cap, possibly has a hole burned in it. if no fire from the coil check to see if the coil is being triggered on the ground side and power to the coil on the positive. if no power check the ASD relay if no ground pulse then check the circuit from the computer. also may want to check the camshaft sensor in the distibutor.

If you have access to an OBII scanner, while cranking you can read all the faults that computer is tracking. Scanners run about $60 but are 1 of the best tools you can own vs throwing parts at it. It's $60 well invested. It resets lights also.

Car dies at random times then wont start sometimes for an hour sometimes in 5 minutes if im driving or stopped at a light it does the samething


ask a local mechanic to have a look this could be anything from a dodgy fuel pump to a dicky ignition switch contact ,possibly even the crank sensor

check to see if getting fuel or if you smell gas when cranking if you smell gas you probably have a spark problem which will probably be a coil and or a pickup coil in your distributor replace coil and then distributor. If you are not getting gas most likely fuel pump in tank see if it will fire on starting fluid then replace fuel pump good luck

I have a 1991 740 volvo, was driving down he street and it died,after i pulled over it wouldn't start


Check if you still getting fuel and sparks, two items need to keep the car running. Check fuses and fuel pump relay, if needing new relays go to the junk yard and get couple of them for nothing. Checking making sure you getting fuel and fuel pump working properly, unplug the the main coil wire to distributor so the car wont start we just want the engine just to turn over. under the hood, locate fuel filter, disconnect the line to or from it, wrap the bottom of the hose with old clothe firmly and to remember to point the house downward away from your face so it wont splash at you. and have a friend turn ignition over just like starting, see if the fuel come out with good pressure. if fuses and relay check out, your crank sensor may be bad, being 91' strong possibility. crank sensor send info to computer telling to send fuel to your injectors. For sparks, make sure you plug the main wire to distributor back. pull one plug wire and get spare plug, plug it and ground the plug and have a friend turn the engine over and see if you getting sparks, do not touch the plug, big shock. No sparks, check the coil if you getting 12v, if yes, than your cam sensor is faulty. The cam sensor work just like the crank sensor but telling the computer to send sparks to the distributor. Common for older European cars, crank and cam sensor tend to become faulty after years of service due to age and heat abuse.

It "won't crank?" Meaning, it won't turn over, or it won't ignite?

If it won't turn over, then it is likely the battery or starter or ignition switch.

If it does crank (turn over) but won't start, and you are specifically not getting any fuel nor spark, then it is likely the hall effect sensor (see "control module" and "pickup coil"). It is two pieces, both on the distributor. Total cost will be around $50 ~ $75 or so.

You'll have to take the distributor out to get to the device, then set timing to complete the job.
