Oil in water

I found oil in my header tank of my kangoo. Someone told me that my oil cooler might be corroded and is leaking. Please help. My e-mail is steyns03@gmail.com

Is it a foamy substance? If so it is not oil it is the new coolant that is called extended life, it breaks down and turns to what appears to be an oily brown sludge. Have the system flushed thoroughly and add the new coolant that doesn't do this.

oil in header tank indicates a blown head gasket this could also explain the hunting.The brakes might just need bleeding,while this is done you can check for fluid leaks.Shakey steering at a certain speed is wheel balancing,this is quite cheap to fix but it must be done at a tyre fitting garage.hope this helps,good luck.

good day is this diesel engine or petrol?both tipes it may be the head gasket blown,causes overheating.on diesel it a posiblity that is can be the oil cooler mixing those 2 also.

Oil getting into water


if it is an automatic ( make and model omitted in question) there is every chance that it is transmission oil from a burst cooler in the radiator tank. The fix is a new radiator or and air to air cooler core fitted in front of the radiator. If the engine is a diesel or an engine that has a sump oil cooler then the oil core has burst allowing engine oil into the radiator vial the coolant system. It may be from a failing head gasket where the oil hole to the rocker gear is leaking across to a water jacket

Oil is entering water system via a small leak in the head gasket adjacent to the oil drilling where the oil comes from the pump through the head gasket up to the head itself to lubricate the camshaft / valve gear. Or, there is a problem with the oil cooler found on a lot of Renaults. If you look at the oil filter there may be a metal donut looking piece with 2 x 3/4 water hoses attached to it. Because the oil pressure is 40+ lbs and the water is 14lbs when running, and if the cooler has an internal leak / fracture, the oil will gradually pass to the water jacket by virtue of the greater pressure.
Disconnect the 2 hoses and join the 2 block ends together with a length of hose, refill the coolant, run the engine for a while and see if there is any trace of oil or bubbles coming from the now open oil cooler stubs. If there is then the cooler is leaking internally. Replacement is the only option. The biggest problem you face is that the engine block, radiator, heater matrix are all carrying the oil sludge that's been circulating the water system. Cleaning all that out successfully may be your biggest quest.
How do I know all this, I'm just doing the same job on a Renault Clio diesel!!
Get some quality help, prepare yourself for changing the head gasket, timing belt etc. I'm going to flush mine with a strong detergent mix on reassembly, running a garden hose into the upper rad stub and allowing the lower to vent out and hope it brings most with it. Only a hot washer would help and I've bought a new header tank from online to replace the discoloured one when there's no gunk left. Good luck.

Does the trans cooler exist inside the radiator on this V6 engine/auto trans combo? I found a brown foam in my 2001 Saturn V6's coolant overflow tank. It was so thick, i could not read the coolant level. ...


hmmm..........there is a OiL COOLER tube for the transmission cooler in ur radiator, that to keep ur tranny fluid to cool down!

As u said, u checked the engine oil, and it has no decrease on oil level!

Ur right about that... better bring that to ur mechanic and evaluate the radiator, the tube inside might have been damage or corroded!

Hope the seals up ur probs!

There is a very easy way to check the oil cooler for leaks.

Do this with the engine cool and be prepared to catch some coolant in a pan.

Remove the 2 coolant hoses from the oil cooler and attach them together using a 5/8 inch straight heater hose connector. You are bypassing the oil cooler temporarily. Wipe the oil cooler clean so you can clearly see any leaks develop.

Now run the engine and watch the oil cooler pipes (the ones you just removed the hoses from) carefully. If you begin to see oil seeping from the cooler pipes you've found your problem.

This might take a while to see so be patient and let the car run for at least 15 mins or more.

Don't worry about the cooler being disconnected while the car is running, but I do recommend reconnecting the cooler if you have to drive it even if you find it to be leaking.

If it is found to be leaking, you will need to replace the part and have your coolant flushed out properly to remove as much of the oil as possible from the system. Also change the engine oil at the same time, it is possible that coolant has gotten into the oil although it may not be obvious.

This is probably a head gasket problem and not an oil cooler problem.

The oil cooler is fairly easy to test.

Remove the cooler from the engine but do not disconnect cooling lines and then pressurize the cooling system. You can use a radiator test tool to put pressure on the cooling system and look for leaks. If it leaks, replace it.

You may also be able to bypass the oil cooler altogether if it leaks.

The head gasket is another story.

Get a 1/4" pipe to spark plug fitting and put a male air coupling fitting in it.

Then you can charge the cylinders with air from your compressor.

Make sure each cylinder that you test is at top dead center so that the valves are closed.

If air bubbles into your coolant, you found your problem.

If air leaks out your intake you have a bad intake valve

If air leaks out your exhaust you have a bad exhaust valve etc.

Sounds like blown head gasket (or worse) still to me.
Remove oil filler cap and look for grey oil.
Never use water these days but special coolant. Water makes vapour spots and cause block cracks, worse then blown gaskets!!!
vapour does not cool very well.
Look like you have cracks already.
Take a compression test if possible. But might not show op at that temperature.
The gauge indication troubles me.

Golf 1.6 coolant


mark 3 and 4 golfs loose water from nearside front bottom corner ov radiator ,does your heater work ok ? these cars also have water pump problems,if this is the case it pushes the water out the header tank and you wont find a leak.
