First --if it goes to the floor and will not come back up the problem will be in the hydraulics or cable

next if you put your foot on the clutch and you cannot engage 1st gear then it is the hydraulic / cable system

next if you take your foot of the clutch when it is in gear and the clutch slips and the rpm\'s go up it may be the hydraulics / cable or the clutch itself

IF the clutch has been operating properly until lately I would be paying attention to the hydraulic / cable areas before I would consider a clutch replacement. IF you have no problems with the clutch but would want to test it

place the vehicle in gear with the hand brake hard on . let the clutch pedal out while reving the engine ( hill start) and if the engine dies out or tends to stall then the clutch is good This is a very short time one off test (1-2 secs) at most

desertracerpeople post here and do not tell what kind of car it is.. really helps if we know.. if the car has a clutch mast er cylinder and it is out of fluid than YES.. thats yyour problem.. But the question is what made this happen.. A LEAK.. the leak can be a bad clutch master or a bad clutch slave cylinder or the line that connects the two.. at worst it would be a collasped clutch cover or threw out bearing.. probably a leak or bad cylinder

How do i know if my fan clutch is bad

There are two ways to check this problem. With engine off, grab fan and spin it. If it takes a minute or so to stop, or feels easy to spin, the clutch may be bad. The other way to check is to start engine, and using a long metal pipe (or lug wrench) insert into fan. If it stops spinning, then the clutch is bad. If using the second method, be certain that engine is idling...DO NOT ACCELERATE!!!

unfortunately, bad news, you cannot adjust your clutch as it is hydraulic.
Hydraulic clutches are adjusted with shims on the flywheel after it has been machined. This happens during a clutch change. You may have other problems like a hydraulic leak or a bad pressure plate, really the only way you can find out is by an inspection bya shop, or if your lucky enough to know someone ....handy

cheers...PK.

You said it the slave cylinder was leaking to replace it how can i tell if its bad if its not leaking

usually when you have a bad clutch slave cylinder you know it right away because since it is a hydraulic part, once a seal inside the slave cylinder gets bad, it will start leaking fluid, at the same time, because the seal is not sealing properly, it will allow air inside the system causing your clutch pedal to feel soft and spongy.
When a clutch pedal feels that way, its an indication of air in the system and when this happens it makes it hard to operate the clutch properly because it engages even with your foot almost all the way to the floor. at times you may not even be able to place your car or truck in gear due to this problem.
A bad clutch master cylinder will have similar symptoms, make sure that you look closely at each one of these items to determine which one is the problem (the one malfunctioning will be the one leaking fluid)
One check you can do on the master cylinder is to depress the clutch pedal while someone watches the brake fluid reservoir level. if the level rises while the clutch pedal is being depressed than the clutch master cylinder is bad and should be rebuilt or replaced.
