Question about 2000 Jaguar S-Type

Hi there, i have a 1999 3.0 s type with a major problem with the autobox, its the 5 speed 5n55r type, i think. the engine will hit 5000 revs and the box simply doesn't change up to the next gear. I am also getting a hell of a rattling sound from under the bonnet. both problems began at the same time.the car has done 130k miles but until very recently ran like a dream. the acceleration is also pityfully slow and the engine is very noisy, sounds more like an americam big bore v8 rather than a 3.0l v6. does anyone have the faintest idea what this is as it sounds rather expensive. the car has a full jaguar service record with no warnings ever been given to me. thanks. frankie.

You have a pressure switch on the box check that is not faulty also check the level of tranny fluid

Sound like you need a new clutch fitting & unfortunately this is expensive as engine/gearbox needs to be taken out to get at the clutch. Cheers, Malcolm Campbell.

I have a 04 Ford freestar that will only start with starter fluid, then runs nice except it idles at 1500-2 rpms and it won't shift till it hits 5000 rpms. As soon as it hits 5 it shifts beautifully?


If the check engine light is on, which it should be, I would start with getting the computer scanned for trouble codes.
Could be a major vac leak, or something else.

Car's rpm meter when coming off highway or from high speed to low speed/stop, starts burping like up and down unless i keep my foot on the gas to keep rpm above 1, otherwise the car stalls at the stop...


It sounds like your vehicles Idle Air Control module is dirty. Have a Free Diagnostic test run at any Major Auto Parts store. Usually it is a simple Professional cleaning required to solve this condition. Also your Air Cleaner Element should be changed. It would be very helpful to know what kind of vehicle you have and what engine it has. Example: Ford, GM, Chrysler or other brand. It is helpful to know how many miles are on the vehicle and what type of driving you do, such as under 5 miles per trip or longer trips such as in excess of 25 miles. Sometimes the EGR Valve is dirty or non functional which could also cause this condition. My advice is to take it to an ASE Certified technician that will have the proper diagnostic equipment to analyze the problem.

My grang cherokee2002 us spec, while driving trnz changes fine but when cick down or full excelrate and RPM reaches 4.5 or 5 engine is loosing power and getting noisy and RPM not going more, while gear on...


You are hitting the rev limiter top range, which cuts off your ignition.

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee and the problem drives me crazy, but it is the way the car is designed- as soon as you hit the rev limit, it shuts down ignition and your jeep will "buck" - a real pain when you are trying to accelerate into traffic!

You have the 4.0L straight six engine, yes?

If so, please take my advice and learn to live with the minor annoyance of the rev limiter- that engine is IMHO the best Chrysler ever made (nearly "bulletproof"!) and it was so reliable you cannot even get it in a jeep now! For decades, that engine was used in welders, tractors, generators...and yes, jeeps... and it is a favorite among mechanics for its durability!

Yes, the PCM for your vehicle's engine has a rev/speed limit seeting programmed into it. Most stock, non high performance/police package vehicles usually won't go above a top speed of 97MPH. if you were to rev your engine while it was in park or neutral, once the engine reaches the cut out rpm limit preset in the PCM, it will cause the engine to cut back, then it will rev up until it hits the preset limit, then cut back, and it keep repeating that pattern. It may sound as though you have a high rev ignition failure that sounds like waaa, waaa, waaa, waaa, but that indicates the PCM is doing its job.

Rev counter jumps when idling and then engine cuts out


sounds like the idle speed sensor,if your rpm's are idling up and down
