Question about 1993 Ford Explorer Limited
Explorer Limited 4wd with 4.0L V6 automatic. Runs great. Idles correct (600-900 rpm) cold or hot when in park or neutral. RPM jumps to 1600 when put in gear (Reverse or Drive). Replaced EGR valve and Vacuum Solenoid valve recently to clear a code.
On some cars there's a speed sensor on the clutch or transmission. That might cause an idle problem.

Replacing the parts mentioned may have cleared the code without solving the real problem.

Use a length of rubber hose to listen around for the leak.
Or use some brakeclean or starting fluid to see where the leak is by it reving up. (stay away from the alternator).
Pinch off any vacuum hoses, one at a time, looking for one that makes a difference.

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.

could be numerous reasons. this is your best bet take it in to a mechanic and have your engine codes scanned. it is a minimal charge, some even do it for nothing it only takes 10 minutes.this will point you in the right direction.

Are you sure that the change in elevation is changing the problem? Or is it just quit after the engine warms up? Does it do it when you get back home? The reason I am asking if the idle is normal after warming up and only high when it is cold, I would suggest the mass air flow sensor. But need to make sure that it is a elevation issue.

Check the engine intake and all vacuum hoses for leaks, do this with a can of spray carb cleaner, if you hit a leak the idle speed will change. Repair what you find.
