Sounds like the car is starting and running, but then for some reason it stops getting gas. This can be anything from bad gas, spark plugs, fuel filter problems, all the way to clogged injectors of the fuel injection system. There are a bunch of smaller parts possible of the mechanical nature also. One thing is for sure, you should try getting an actual mechanic to look at it. They will have to troubleshoot the problem. It includes possibly using the lift system, and air hoses with good pressure and stuff like that, so it will cost a few bucks. Sorry I cant pinpoint from this machine on this, but it is only as good as its machining systems allow.

also, the O2 sensors are famous on these for going. check these, it could solve a lot of your problems. wins don't do it often, but throw a little fuel injector cleaner/sea foam in your gas, be sure to read the directions first! I haven't completely fixed my car yet, but the sea foam has helped a lot. and be sure the chip in your key isn't faulty, sometimes you'll have a hard time with starting your car if there's an issue with the connection between the chip in the key and the car. if you go to a parts store, they can check for codes for free, as well as checking your battery, alternator, and starter. do not always take their advice if you ask them what the problems may be. they are in retail for a reason instead of working at a shop. they're there to sell you parts, not diagnose/fix your car. just start with simple things such as changing filters, checking for codes, checking sensors, your connections, fuses, etc. definitely take it to a mechanic, but be sure you can trust them as well, and that they're not trying to screw you out of money. if you don't have an engine light on, get it scanned anyway. there are sometimes soft codes that won't pop a light, but will still show up when you scan it. these cars are also famous for misfiring. do a tune up: plugs, wires, oil change, gaskets, check the coil.. all of that stuff. these are things you should typically keep up on regardless, so doing this def shouldn't do any harm, and it could solve your problem as well. cars stall out for many reasons, and it's sometimes a good indication that something is wrong, and avoiding further damage. that's not exactly why it will, but it's good that it does stall out. also, make sure that it warms up to temp before you drive it, it's easier on the motor, and doesn't force it to work harder. but again, start with simple maintenance, and go from there. get your codes run first and then do your tune up etc. if your problems aren't solved, have a mechanic run through it and try to find the problem, though that could get costly. good luck, let me know if you could use some more help. mines not fixed yet due to not having time to do it. but I already know that my O2 sensor is much of my issue, because it's causing the system to be too lean. feel free to contact me with any additional questions or info you might have. hope this helps!

Run the fault codes and look for problems in the canister system. Sounds like the tank is not venting properly and creating a vacuum in the tank which is restricting fuel flow to the engine.

have you had someone plug a computer into it and see if it is logging a code? this code be a v.s.s. sensor, to a fuel code. you might run the car by your local mechanic or autozone, advance auto, pepboys etc, they will normally pull the code for you for free and let you know what the outcome is. good luck any other questions just let me know i'll try to help.

Here is what you do, but only when the SECURITY light flashes - if it is always ON or OFF it's no use.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes ( SECURITY light will flash for 10 minutes and then stay on SOLID)
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the ignition OFF.

Start the car normally.
It has relearnt the keycode and you're good to go.
NOTICE - it takes 30 minutes to relearn, that's THREE cycles of ON - 10 minutes - OFF.

Good luck.

SOURCE: 1996 Olds Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Several GM products, including the Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, the Oldsmobile Alero, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Saturn Ion, have issues with the Security light coming on. This is many times an indication of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). Initially, the Security light will come on then go off, progressing to a constant on light, before the car will refuse to start. Other symptoms may include erratic action of electronics, a clicking sound coming from the glove box, and the air conditioning failing to blow cold air. I recommend a shop that specializes in the electronic systems of vehicles to diagnosis and make the necessary repairs. They should keep the car until they replicate the symptoms described. A new BCM from GM should cost about $230; plan on another $200 for them to diagnose the problem, replace the unit, and program the new unit. The dealers quote between $700 and $1,100 for the same repair. My experience and the experiences I have read on the internet, indicate the new BCM should last only about a year.

Instructions
    • 1 Attempt to start the car. If it does not start, or dies very quickly after it started, then leave the key in the ignition in the "ON" position and wait 10 minutes. Make sure the security light is flashing. After 10 minutes the security light will stop flashing and either turn off or stay on steadily. When it does, then turn the ignition off, wait 20 seconds and attempt to restart the car.
    • 2 Repeat this procedure three times in quick succession without removing the key from the ignition.
    • 3 Start the car following the third 10-minute waiting period. The car should start and stay on. If it stays running, then the codes have been relearned and the problem is solved. If the car still does not start then you may need to have all or part of the passlock system replaced

Several components help a car start: 1) Starter, 2) Battery, 3) Camshaft sensor, 4) Crankshaft sensor, 5) Fuel pump, 6) Coils/Plugs. Start by testing each of those to ensure spark is reaching plugs on a consistent basis. If u can hear fuel pump - and you are sure fuel is in the tank (sometimes the fuel sending unit goes out, making you THINK fuel is there...). Cover each of those, and it should start...if the security system isn't being signaled to stay activated...security can also prevent a start... :-)

The problem you describe sounds like what I had a few months ago. Have the trouble code checked at Autozone for free and if you get 172 & 174 then you have isolator bolt problems (The engine is running lean). The fix is to replace the isolator bolts ($7 each) and clean the ports. Should take about an hour or two. Contact me at cmckllar<at>bbtel<dot>com for futher help.

Service engine soon light

hi,

had a 97 grand prix and could not get the light out for any period of time, It ended up being the exhaust gas sensor saying incomplete burn due to an intermittent miss, had to change plugs, plug wires and finally injector service but the light stayed out after that, that was a 3.8 V6, hopefully that helps
