It is possible you have a bad bearing in the alternator. They make an automotive stethoscope to listen for this, but sometimes you can get by using a screwdriver and pressing your ear against the handle while touching the tip to the body of the alternator. Be careful not to get the screwdriver into the alternator fan. You can generally hear a bad bearing. Perhaps a better check is to take the belt off the alternator and spin it by hand (when cold). If it turns rough, makes noise, or wobbles, the bearing is bad.

Remove the belt and stat the engine. If no noise spin each pulley with hand. lock for drag and excessive play. oil on your belt will be a reason to. don't over thigh the belt, will damage the bearings

Screeching noise coming from belt area. just replaced powere steering pump & belt & this started.

The screeching is the belt slipping, two possibilities, either the belt is not tight enough, or you have fitted a faulty pump which is putting to much resistance on the belt? If it carries on screeching for any length of time it will break. Check your alternator belt tension, if you had to remove and refit that? Quick check for alternator belt is, switch on headlights, does the screech get louder? Don't over tighten the belts, this puts stress on bearings!

Screeching sound remains

Your AC pump is starting to faiL. It's starting to bind and putting heavy back pressure on the belt causing it slip and screech. After the car cools off inside, the load on the AC compressor is lower and the sound will die down. Also when the belt gets hot it gets a little more flexible and grippy which also lowers sound.

Take it to an auto AC repair place and have it checked.

the belt will make a screeching noise for the power steering if it is loose or worn out. check out the belt, or the power steering pump front bearings failed and will not let steering pump to spin. have a good day !!

I have 2003 Passat with 140K on the clock, 8 months ago it developed a screeching noise turning the wheel left and right when stationary like the belt was screeching. The garage could not see a problem,...

the screeching noise could be rubber deposits on the belt pulley or pulley bearings for the power steering pump BUT its also a big clue that the timing belt tensioner is about to give up...CHECK BOTH please.....

Power steering problem

If the belt is loose, that would definitely give you that screech you are hearing...does the sound of the screech vary with the engine speed (in idle)? No matter...the belt should be tight enough that if you press down on the belt, it should move no more than about 1/8 of an inch...another thing you could do is get an aerosol spray called Belt Quiet (I think that's what it's name is), you can pick it up at any autoparts store; what that stuff does is lubricates the belt and pulley to reduce unwanted friction which could also be causing your screech.

As for the power steering pump, unless it was complete,ly dry, there is no need to bleed the pump. Cheers!
