Question about Pontiac Grand Am
From your symptoms, it sounds like a clogged filter (fuel and/or air), lower fuel pressure, or clogged catalytic convertor. Where the car is a 1991 and the miles are so low, the car has sat for a majority of its life. Run a great fuel injector cleaner through the fuel system at every fill-up, for a month. It is very possible that there is sludge build-up, inside the fuel system. Sludge would restrict fuel flow and cause your symptoms. Find out when the last "Complete Tune-up" was done. you may need new filters. Please start with this information and let me know. You could have a transmission problem or a restriction in the exhaust but with diagnostics you need to start at a chosen point and move forward. The fuel system is a great place to start. Don't worry about writing too much. The more information about symptoms, things noticed, details, repairs, or tests performed the better I can help you,Good luck.

My daughter had the same problem. She brought it to me and it turned out to be a bare wire shorting out against the the frame near the fire wall under the hood. Look for a small wire (two leads) coming from the transmission close to the fire wall. Than look for any place where it may have rubbed bare or been pinched or otherwise compromised. It was really interesting because she had it into a garage several times and they changed a number of things at great expense and could not solve the problem. In frustration she called me...lol

I would look for a fault in the ignition system such as a cracked spark plug. Might need a scope check to put your finger on the problem
