Question about Pontiac Grand Am

2 Answers

Transmission solenoid 1991 Pontiac Grand Am At 75 Mph car starts to buck. Problem started with being at 75 and the car shuddering. Then it became worse and started happening when switching gears only at a certain RPM around 3200. Car only has 54,000 Miles, was not abused, old lady drove it. Tranny fluid smells fine no codes come up at all. Even got it checked for preexisting codes and nothing. I think it is a solenoid but am not sure where to start.

From your symptoms, it sounds like a clogged filter (fuel and/or air), lower fuel pressure, or clogged catalytic convertor. Where the car is a 1991 and the miles are so low, the car has sat for a majority of its life. Run a great fuel injector cleaner through the fuel system at every fill-up, for a month. It is very possible that there is sludge build-up, inside the fuel system. Sludge would restrict fuel flow and cause your symptoms. Find out when the last "Complete Tune-up" was done. you may need new filters. Please start with this information and let me know. You could have a transmission problem or a restriction in the exhaust but with diagnostics you need to start at a chosen point and move forward. The fuel system is a great place to start. Don't worry about writing too much. The more information about symptoms, things noticed, details, repairs, or tests performed the better I can help you,Good luck.

My daughter had the same problem. She brought it to me and it turned out to be a bare wire shorting out against the the frame near the fire wall under the hood. Look for a small wire (two leads) coming from the transmission close to the fire wall. Than look for any place where it may have rubbed bare or been pinched or otherwise compromised. It was really interesting because she had it into a garage several times and they changed a number of things at great expense and could not solve the problem. In frustration she called

I would look for a fault in the ignition system such as a cracked spark plug. Might need a scope check to put your finger on the problem

96 grand prix slipping transmission

Once it starts slipping in all gears it needs a kit. You need a hoist to get the thing out and back in. If you are looking for a low buck fix many junkyards will sell you a used one and put it in. They are almost always cheaper than a "Transmission Shop". If you have the tools and want to do it yourself buy a service manual for the car from eBay or Amazon or a former Pontiac dealer and have at it. It's not all that difficult with a hoist but it is still along day.

Shuttering at highway speeds

well the kickdown cable out of adjust ment would only screw up your shifting timing and when the vehicle downshifts when you press the accelerator hard. usually a shudder at cruise speeds 40 mph or higher indicates a torque converter problem or the govenor pressure solenoid and sensor. i personally would start by replaceing the sensor and solenoid and install a new filter
