1986-1989 Honda Accord with Carburetor have a very bad habit that is little known even by most mechanics but easily fixed at home. The vacuum port on the choke opener that is connected to the intake manifold and both vacuum ports on the fast idle unloader get plugged up with nasty hard carbon almost as hard as metal. When this happens the choke sticks closed and the idle sticks on fast idle when the engine is cold and nobody can figure out why. All you have to do is attach a small drill bit to the end of a flexible socket-driver extension and put it in a variable speed drill that will let you run it real slow and carefully drill out the vacuum ports that are plugged. After they are nice and clean use a vacuum pump tester to make sure the choke opener and fast idle unloader are working before putting it all back together. It's amazing how much better the car runs after cleaning out those ports.

How do I decrease idle speed?

The higher idle speed is part of the "cold start" sequence. It is controlled by the thermostat and a temperature sensor. You may need to change them both for faster action.

Idles high when cold 2004 jetta 1.8 t

This is normal. The ECM monitors engine temperature and increases idle when it sees the engine is cold. The ECM sets the idle back to normal when engine temperature rises.

Why does my2004 gmc envoy xl slt idle high at startup?

This is normal. All vehicles idle high at start up to get the engine to operating temperature. This is known as open loop. The computer ignores signals from O2 sensors to keep your engine running safely. Once it has warmed up, it will enter closed loop, and you will see a decrease in idle.

High rev at cold (winter cold!) idle

Your toyota technician should know what a "cold starting solenoid" is. It is the little thing that works your throttle until the motor warms up and something else takes over. I'd suggest going to another technician.

Cooling fan problems

Hi Dave the ECU receives messages from sensors, one of which is a temperature sensor. When the sensor responds to a temp higher than the normal operating temp the fans are then and only then supposed to operate. They will switch in for a brief period and then turn off again. The idle speed is in direct relation to the cold start up idle requirements and specifications. When the engine is cold the idle speed will automatically increase and as the engine achieves operating temp, the idle speed will decrease inthe way you have recorded. If you start the engine and allow it to idle until normal temp is achieved the fan should cut in. The way you've desribed all systems are A okay!. Regards John

Chevy Malibu Cold Idle Problem

Check the water coolant thermostat. If it is stuck in the "open" position you are heating up all the water in the coolant system and this will take time. The thermostat keeps the water in the engine until warmed up to almost normal running temperature, only then does it allow the coolant to enter the radiator.

I turn on ignition and vehicle starts to idle real high seems like accelarator cable is sticking

Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out. If the idle speed is always at a high rpm, do the same.A leakage of air into the intake manifold can also cause the latter problem. A leakage however will not be evident via a scan. Hi, i own a honda accord 91, and its start to acelerate an deacelerate by itself, i dont have idea what could t be thaks

if when its cold and runs at a high idle like normal, and then when it reaches operating temp it starts to fluctuate in the revs. (up and down from 900 rpm to around 2500 rpm) you will find that the engine management temp sender is faulty. To ensure this is the fault. When its doing this and at normal running temp. stop the engine, Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes. Reconnect the battery this clears all the codes stored buy the computer. Start the car while still at the normal operating temp. If the problem is gone it is the sensor i have previously stated. This sensor can be found on th back end of the cylinder head its a two wire sensor. I hope this has helped.
