Gauge in-tank probably your problems. You can test it at connector near fuel tank . there is 2 kind of gauge one is 0 to 90 ohms or 0 to 250 ohms. if the reading is not good then gauge is defect
hope it helps

SOURCE: my gas gage is either on full or once in a while 2002 buick regal

there is a float in your gas tank kinda like the float in your toilet. Sometimes they stick and if the bell goes off then back.. it prob. from the gas splashing in the tank. I wouldnt' be concerned too much.

SOURCE: Fuel gauge doesn't work

(not the float per say) the sending unit on the pump assembly is very fragile , if you were to look very closely at the button that makes contact to the variable resistor plate while moving the float up and down you might notice that the button can move away from the resistor board and loose contact , thus causing erratic readings at the dash gauge , i have had to remove the float arm and bend the contact arm so as it would have more pressure to the resistor board , or replace the sending unit itself , but when installing the pump Assembly into the tank it can be damaged easily , be careful when installing , its no fun doing it once let alone twice.

SOURCE: gas gauge not accurate

there is only one thing that causes this, and that is the guage sending unit in the gas tank.

SOURCE: My fuel gauge floats from full to empty when I stop at a light! And its stays on empty until I drive for about five minute why is that? I can't get an accurate fuel reading!!

I have the same vehicle and my car actually was full of gas, registered empty & left me on the side of the road..It was the sensor in the fuel line that had to be replaced.

SOURCE: 1999 buick park avenue gas gauge fouled

You may be right. the float (sending unit) may be bad . i would also check the connections to sending unit and pump. this is located at rear top area of the gas tank.

the last thing that i have seen is the baffle inside the tank breaks free and moves around in tank banging into sending unit (float). when you remove the sender and pump form tank stick your hand into hole and make sure baffle does not move. if it does then tank must be replaced.

There is a ground to the frame in the rear area of the tank. i would look at that also. if you follow black wire from connector you will see it go to frame or to be specfic the unibody. i dont think it would be that but just make sure. if it were to be that wire you would have fuel problems but who knows for sure there sometimes two grounds, one for pump and one for sender. good day.

Gas gauge reading wrong

One of two things: either the gage itself is malfuntioning or the float/sending unit in the gas tank is failing. Disconnect the plug at the tank for the sending unit, pick up a new sending unit and attach it to the plug without taking the old unit out of the tank. Then operate the float up and down on the new sending unit. If the gas gage reads correctly when the float is all the way up (full) and all the way down (empty) the old sending unit is probably bad and should be replaced. If there is no difference when you connect the new sending unit, the gage is probably bad. Then you can return the new sending unit (as long as the auto parts store allows returns of electrical parts) and buy a new gage. Install the new gage and...happy motoring.

Fuel gage does not work. The gage will read full but after driving for about 30 miles it will read empty & the light chimes on.

sounds like a bad float / sensor or just a bad ground.
Check the connections where the fuel pump goes into the gas tank. Make sure the ground is good and solid and not rusty. If wiring is good the float is probably bad

Gas gage isnt right it keeps floating

The Sorento gs tank is under the floor in the back seat. Flip the seat bottom's forward and pull open the Velcro to access the top of the tank. The fuel pump and sender may be accessible from the top, but you might be unlucky and have t remove the tank.
