If you do not have the cam shaft connected then the resistance will be the valves hitting on the pistons. Next ensure that the transmission is in neutral and not in gear with the hand brake on. Take out all the spark plugs so that there is no compression occurring as you turn the crank shaft.

Sounds like the timing belt broke. Unfortunately this vehicle was not equiped with no contact valves so if that is the case you will need to have the engine and Head rebuilt. If the crank position sensor can't sense the position of the crank it should shutdown the electrical to keep you from damaging your engine.

Setting timing marks to get vehicle to start after engine overhaul

Timing marks setting Corolla 4A-FE.
Align the notch on the crankshaft pulley with the "0" mark on the timing belt lower cover.

With the crankshaft pulley being aligned with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover, the hole on the camshaft sprocket should exactly be in front of the notch of camshaft bracket.

Timing chain installation

1996-1999 Toyota Corolla valve timing:
It is very easy to install the timing belt on 1997 Toyota Corolla. Do the following:
- Mark the numbers 1,2 and 3 on the spark plug wires with permanent marker or nail polish and remain the 4th one unmarked. This is necessary so that you can easily remember the spark plug wires order later on their original position.
- Remove the spark plugs so that the engine can easily be rotated.
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to align the v- groove mark on the crankshaft pulley with the 0 mark on the timing belt cover. If these marks are aligned the piston is always on the Top Dead Position (TDC).
25502648-okm0ksuj3f3lm2ubjq0dkjux-5-0.jpg

- To replace the timing belt remove the crankshaft pulley, upper and lower timing covers.
- Temporarily screw in the crankshaft bolt in its place to rotate the crankshaft with the spanner and align the v- groove of lower crankshaft gear with the index mark on the oil pump cover as shown in the following diagram.
- Inspect the cam shaft mark through the small hole on the cam shaft sprocket. The punch mark should be exactly behind the hole on the cam shaft sprocket as shown in the following diagram.

25502648-okm0ksuj3f3lm2ubjq0dkjux-5-2.jpg
- Loosen the timing bearing bolt, press the bearing forcefully against the spring with some suitable tool and lock it there temporarily.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Remove the timing bearing.
- Replace the new timing belt and bearing with the original.
- Install in the reverse order of dis-assembly.
NOTE: NEVER PUT EXTRA FORCE ON TIMING BEARING TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT TENSION. JUST LOOSEN THE TIMING BEARING BOLT AND THE SPRING ATTACHED TO IT WILL PULL THE BEARING IT SELF WITH THE PRESET TENSION TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT.

I am trying to replace my timing belt on my 1992 Toyota Corolla [1.6 liter engine], but I cant figure out how to remove the gears the belt was on ,we already removed the belt because it broke .please give...

Why remove the gears? No need to. Just be sure they are clean of any belt residue. The gears are locked in the correct position for the shafts.
You need to rotate the gears to position the shafts (Crank and Cam) to the correct position before installing the belt. Follow the instructions that should have come with the belt. Usually need to line up some marks on the gears to marks on the engine case for the valve timing to work right.
Pull the spark plugs so you can turn the crankshaft easier (BY HAND ONLY) Mark the wires to reinstall correctly. I did this a long time ago. Seem to remember pointing the mark on one gear to the mark on the other gear. Use a straight edge to line up the two. Dont take this as gospel.
Good luck.

Timing marks

The timing marks are on the crankshaft pulley and the cover just behind it. The area may need a good wipe-down and a strong light to see the marks - they are there. If you like. locate #1 plug lead and mark the position. Remove the distributor cap and turn the engine till the rotor lines up with the #1 plug position. The timing marks on the pulley and the casing should now be more or less lined up. If you are looking for the TDC mark, it is the last one on thpulley or marked as "0" on the casing.

I need to know the camshaft timing on my 1991 corolla. It has the 1.6

With the Keyway on the crankshaft at the 12 O'Clock position the timing mark on the crank shaft gear shiuld line up with the timing mark on the crankcase at the 1 O'Clock position.
For the Camshaft gear, the small hole under the " 4A " on the gear should line up with the indent on the front camshaft bearing cap. The approximate correct oposition of the camshaft gear is also indicated by the No. 4 Cylinder exhaust valves just closing and the inlet valves just opening.

I am planning to replace the timing belt on my daughter's 95 Corolla and was wondering what I need to align where before removing the belt eg How do I find TDC? Camshaft pulley and Crankshaft pulley...

TDC is top dead center/ remove spark plug on cylinder no. 1/ rotate the crankshaft pulley using a socket wrench and power handle and check if the piston on your cylinder no. 1 reach the top center that is TDC/ remove timing belt cover and locate a synchronized marking on your camshaft and crankshaft pulley/ remove old timing belt/ install a new one but make sure that the mark on your camshaft and crankshaft is perfectly synchronized before putting the cover/ manually rotate the crankshaft pulley again and see if it rotates 360 deg. freely then you can be sure you did the job correctly.

Need to know the timing marks on 1992 toyota

you may find them online but if it were me i would go to local auto parts and spend the $24.95 on a haynes repair manual it has pictures of the marks and the tension specs etc worth the $$ , remove #12 spark plug and take a peice of wire stick it into the hole till it touchs the piston then rotate the crankshaft till its a top dead center then look down at the line up marks behind the crank gear they should line up then rotate the camshaft till marks line up should be 12 oclock on cam gear? this is sometimes tricky to get it lined up without it being 1 tooth off thats why picture is best ? hope this helps autodoc01@live.com

well not sure exactly why it wont line up use something to turn the crank and cam to appropiate position start sliding crank gear until cam gear is touching then start to push both at same time make sure your crank key and cam pin are bothin place On many OHV pushrod engines, the crankshaft sprocket is installed on the crankshaft nose and the crankshaft is rotated to position piston #1 at TDC. At this point, a mark stamped onto the crankshaft sprocket is pointing directly upward (toward the camshaft).
The camshaft sprocket is then temporarily bolted to the cam and used to rotate the cam until a mark stamped on the cam sprocket is pointing directly downward (toward the crankshaft). The sprocket is then removed from the cam (without allowing the cam to rotate).
The timing chain is looped over the cam gear, the mark on the cam gear is positioned directly downward, and the chain is looped around the crankshaft sprocket. When the cam sprocket is attached to the cam, the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets should be pointing toward one another.
