Question about 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The engine light came on, I took it to the dealer and they said it needed a new gas cap. I purchased a new gas cap but the light is still on 3 days later? I was wondering how long it could take for the engine light to go off?

The light needs to be turned off with a scanner. Try the store where you bought the gas cap and ask if they have a scanner. If not, try Advance Auto or Pep Boys. Alternatively, you can disconnect the battery negative cable or the computer fuse for several minutes, but this will cause the loss of radio and other engine settings that may need to be relearned by the car automatically after a few miles of driving.

A loose or defective gas cap is the most common cause of this problem. There are other possibilities, but they are less likely. To turn off the light, you need to erase the fault codes from the computer's memory (like giving the computer amnesia) Disconnect the battery's negative cable for one minute then reconnect it. The light should now go out. If the light comes back on, the system will need a lot more testing to diagnose the problem.

PS Simply not properly tightening the gas cap after refueling the vehicle will also cause this light to come on.

Don't worry about that light, if performance and fuel economy is good. The light is still a fault from the evaporative canister.. It should not affect performance. Just make sure the fuel cap is snug. Just perform The ODBII scan periodically to catch any future problems. The vacume diaphragm for canister purge should be unplugged and the vacume hose plugged. This will avoid engine from sucking fuel into the engine due to a ruptured diaphragm in the canister

Check engine light came on and code said to replace gas cap, did that and two weeks later check engine came on same code, then one day fuel light came on and gauge went to fueull then empty 2 times , now...

You wouldn't think a gas cap would be that important, but it is. When it's loose or cracked, fuel vapors leak out and can throw the whole fuel system off. This causes a reduction in gas mileage and increases emissions.
What causes it: If you get an error pointing to the gas cap it means fuel vapors are leaking out of your cap. This means the cap is either cracked or just wasn't tightened well enough.
What you should do: If your car isn't feeling jerky or strange when the check engine light comes on the first you should check is the gas cap. Pull over, retighten it, and take a look at the cap to see if it has any cracks in it. Continue driving and see if the check engine light turns off. Alternately, you can purchase a gas cap for about $3 at an auto parts store. All you need to do is take the old one off and screw on the new one. If you've already made it to the store, you might as well just replace it. While not car-threatening, it's good to take care of this right away to improve gas mileage.

Lets start with how knowledgeable you are

You have an EVAP System issue, maybe

You asked if the gas cap is specific

You know that it is to some extent
Application Specific -but the parts store
would give you the correct one

Was the first code even related to a gas cap?

When you say I was told, you mean what?

A professional mechanic you asked a question,
took a guess to give you an answer?

Do you know how to test the solenoid your
referring to? If not take it to a repair shop &
let them Smoke Test it & actuate all the system
components with a scan tool.

There's a very minor vacumn leak somewhere in the fuel system, it's most likely the cap as stated. If the codes keeps comming back, go see the dealer that fixed the fuel tank problem about it. You should let them know your having trouble with it.

Have you checked the gas cap to see if it is on tight? If you purchased gas in the last couple days it might be the solution. Tighten the cap and drive a couple days to see if the light goes off. If the cap is loose, you might need a new cap.

2005 chevy cobalt check engine light

make sure the gas cap is on tight. vapor recovery system depends on the closure of the gas cap. if that did not solve your problem, I would suggest to get a new gas cap first, before going to the dealer or any repair shop for a turn-up.
