Question about 1992 Chevrolet Caprice

My 1992 caprice keeps dying when its cold

Car dies and runs rough when its cold, I suspect it could be plugs and wires or fuel pump, once it warms up its ok until the next day, this is my backup car and I don't want to spend any more on it than I have to, how should I go about finding my problem without fixing all kinds of things that may be fine?

Here are the more common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and/or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving

    No I did not suggest any product accept throttle body cleaner.

    Also clean the Mass airflow sensor that is located in the intake engine air inlet

    The K&N filter may have contaminated it with oil from the cotton filter fibers.

    i didn't actually use the K&N kit, I just had it laying around, I cleaned the way you suggested and it worked like a charm, I suspect i still need a tune-up but it is a whole world of difference already, thank you, your a big help

    No I do not recommend the use of the oily K&N, the oil mist gets into the MAF sensor and causes a sigbnal issue, this causes all kinds of havoc like loss of power engine suring unaand down at idle AND OTHER ISSUES. GET THE PAPER FILTER AND USE IT

SOURCE: 1990 full size blazer starts fine idles then dies

sounds real easy either a bad idle air control solenoid or more likley a blown throttle body gasket. to test fro a blown gasket, with engine running and cool spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around base of tb were it bolts to intake. when it hits the bad area, should idle down and be normal for a second or 2. iac is possible,try this first since its so common and let me know

hei module on the distributor can cause the same problem, but if it is an lt1 the distributor could be going out. The lt1's are known to get coolant inside of them and burn up. Easy way to check the problem is to get a fuel pressure gauge from advance auto parts and check the fuel pressure while your driving, just zip tie the gauge the the wipper arm and watch the gauge while driving. It's easier with a co-pilot.back to the Hei module, this module sends a signal to the computer to control injector pulse and ignition fire. If you take it off( under rotor) and bring it to Advance they can check it.

Sounds the EGR valve and EVP sen is bad even if you tested it. The EGR valve cntrols idle and if carbon up will make the car stall or idle high and low (rpms going up and down) This was common on all cars during that time. I would say replace the EGR valve and senosr. This should take care of the problem. One more thing have the fuel pressure check on the car.

You need to find oput what you loose when the truck shuts off, all you need is Air, Fuel , and spark to run one of the three are droppuig out when it stalls and will not run. Chech the carb for gas it sounds like you have a weak fuel pump.

Vacume leak or bad idle motor. With the car in park and running with the hood open listen for leaks moving your hand around the different hoses looking for a change in the sounds that you hear. The idel motor also makes the car idel up to 1500 RPM or so right at start-up then idel down, If it doesn;t the idel motor is likly. Check engine light is on when running? Test for codes, Follow code test charts don't skip any steps!.

Why does it die when first drivin at stop lights/signs ?


power steering puts a lot of load on the engine and if the idle compensator does not adjust it dies. a struggling pump can cause more load. when pump gets warm it works easier. Notice how when you check fluid it says hot cold.

Although is could be a fuel filter, it could also be a fouled spark plug, or a bad spark plug wire. Once you've ruled these things out, the problem could be the TPS (throttle position sensor). This controls your idling speed under all conditions. A faulty TPS will usually idle fine when the engine is cold but once warm, will tend to sputter and in some cases, stall.

This could be a number of things but i think that your problem sounds like a vacuum leak or an EGR problem. Try listening for leaks and try un-plugging the EGR solenoid valve one time.

thers a oil psi senser that wont let the fuel pump run at low psi when the car worms the psi gos down ,the fuel rely only runs the pump for about five sec as a primer then the oil psi senser takes over thirs a plug righi behind the oil fliter for the senser ,un plug it and put ajumper wire across it as a test ,you may need a oil pump
