Question about 1990 Cadillac Deville

1 Answer

Failed NOx emissions test

The car passed this test last year after I drove it about 50 miles at 65 mph. However, that didn't work this time. The technician suggested a tune up since the car has 108k miles on it, high idle speed and low gas milage. I think I could do the tune up myself I knew what parts need replacing, since most repair shops want anywhere from $600 to $1400. Do you know where I can find the steps or a guide on how to tune a car this old?

First up-- run the fault codes to determine where the tune up needs to be done to save money on unnecessary parts replacement. The CPU and ECM constantly keep en engine tuned up and will continue to do so until a sensor gets out of parameters . By previously driving at a speed to fix a fault indicates a sensor problem .. When you have the code/s come back in a comment box and may be we can give you pointers on where to attack the problem

SOURCE: at low speed 5-15 mph

the O2 sensor code should not cause a stall, the EGR might if it were stuck open but we don't see them stick and un-stick all by there self's, what you are describing is a bad idle air control valve ( motor ) we see these fail all the time and they don't generally set a code, it is a pretty easy repair it mounts right on the side of the throttle body, the best thing i can tell you is to by a new one that way you know what to look for under the hood, you need no special tools to replace the motor just some tourx bits, when you remove the motor take some carb. cleaner and clean the passage under the IAC motor.

let me know if there is any thing else i can do for you.

Why would my car not pass Georgia Emissions testing?

Can you remember how many miles you have driven since the engine was installed? What I mean is that if you have a good running engine and have a new converter, sometimes the easiest things are the ones overlooked. Check your air filter to make sure it isn't dirty and restricting air flow. Also check your spark plugs to see what kind of shape they are in and if they are burning clean. Spark plugs can tell a lot. If you had transfered any emission related parts from the old engine to the new, maybe one of those items has an issue or is clogged. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Will an engine bought from a 1999 Silverado originally sold outside of California pass California emissions

There are two type of emission classes.

Federal and California emissions.

Look under the hood for the emission class sticker.
Smog check station's machine in CA are programmed to handle both types.

You do not need to change anything before the inspection.

==== Side notes: You should check the service record for the last Catalytic converter,O2 sensors and EGR valve change.
Service interval for
Catalytic ~180,000 miles O2 ~150,000 miles EGR ~160,000 miles

If you can locate the last smog test (even from out of state) Check for the
CO NOx

1996 jimmy failed an emission test

Did you change the air filter. The fuel filter will have no impact on emmision's but the air filter is a very common problem. If you usually drive it at low rev.'s then before you send it for emmisions test you will need to put it in a low gear and floor it for about a mile the reason is when it is being tested the engine is reved up to around 3500 rpm and any build up of unburned fuel or oil in the exhaust system will put up the emmisions reading.

Failed Emissions test. OBD II not ready. Code for Low EGR Flow. Found EGR port clogged in intake plenum. Removed plenum and cleaned port, replaced all gaskets, check egr valve with vaccum(OK),...

Rich:

The trick to setting all the monitors is:
Make sure you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel but no more than 3/4.
Clear codes then Do Not cycle key off. Start vehicle and drive, make sure you do at least 2 minutes of steady spead between 40-50 mph and at least 2 minutes at 50-65 mph, usually about a 20 to 25 mile drive will set them..
If you turn the ignition off before the monitors complete then EVAP will have to see a 6 hour cold soak before it will attempt to run again.
