Question about 2006 Volkswagen Passat
Battery went flat and when I restarted I had a red steering wheel fault light and no power steering. There are 3loud beeps when I start the car. Help please
Get your battery charged and get it tested. The steering wheel fault is generated usually when low battery power occurs, and once restored, and car is driven a few feet,it clears itself..

may be that the alternator isnt supplying enough voltage and the system isnt working correctly due to that, put a new battery in dont just jump start not always ideal

hi, if the 2 problems happened at the same time then probably your alternator belt has broken, as the power steering is also run off the same belt

Testimonial: "Actually the serpentine belt broke which powers a variety of things, power steering pump, alternator, water pump etc."

this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating
that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of
lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected
a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM,
SRS, TPMS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You
must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool
and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for

When the airbag light (SRS) is on or blinks it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating flat ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called the clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the steering wheel while maintaining a mechanical connection to the airbag mounted on the steering wheel, to replace this part you must disarm the airbag system and remove the steering wheel, this requires a special steering wheel puller tool and that you disarm the airbag system before you start the work, to do this disconnect the battery negative cable for 1/2 hour prior.
