Question about 1997 Subaru Legacy
160K miles. Just had the alternator fixed, so I don't think it's an issue with power. I'm thinking the TPS sounds like the most correct? And I have been needing to get the EGR valve fixed (had it done once, but they didn't clean out the entire system so it needs to be done again) it couldn't be that could it?
The problem is the rubber vibration isolation engine mounts are hard from the engine heat. Replace all the engine mounts and the transmission mount.

SOURCE: Cold Start Idle Issue
Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.

SOURCE: Recently, my wife's 1998 Subaru
I had the same problem on our 1999 Forester after replacing the battery. Here was the solution I was given by Subaru Santa Cruz.
1) the key to the ON position where all the dash lights up. 2) disconnect the NEGATIVE battery terminal. 3) wait 15 seconds then reconnect the the battery. 4) start the engine from the ON position.
If this doesn't work, the car must be taken in for repair.

Did you recently replace the axles on the vehicle? This problem commonly occurs in Subarus when you replace the axles with non-OEM parts. The only fix seems to be to swap out the axles for OEM parts. Search the forums at subaruoutback.org for many stories of the same condition and some theories on why non-OEM axles cause the problem.

yes it's most likely a alternator problem, usually the internal diode bridge breaks causing all lights you mentioned to come on,if this happens at a idle open the hood and remove green connector on alt.if lights go out you've found the problem
