If the alt is working then there may be a draw on the electrcal system when the key is off ,and pulling the charge out of your battery in time,a good way to ck. this is to first unplug the underhood light then unhook the positive battery c able use a 12v.test light between the battery and the unhooked cable if the light is on there is a draw go to the fuse pannels (under hood &under dash)pull one fuse at a time till the test light shuts off, that is the curcut with the draw, then look for shorts ,no ground and ect.

I would look to 1) The battery. Don't know where you are or when prob started, but the bitter cold weather can kill an aged or weak battery. It may be 1 cell that has gone bad. Or, 2) The battery cables. There may be corrosion built up on the terminals, Or some other reason good contact isn't being maintained. Or the cables themselves may be needing replaced. The best way to check the battery is to either take it to a parts store where they can test it, or put it in another car and see if the problem follows the battery.

You'll need to have the car scanned and get the OBD II P Code. Most auto parts store will do it for free. That will tell you why the light is on.

How do I locate the tensioner for the alternator belt on a 2003 kia spectra?

I wondered the same thing and looked for days on end. To my surprise, there is no tension pulley for the 2003 Kia Spectra. The Kia 4 cyl has two (2) belts. The outside belt services the power steering and air conditioning. The inside belt (the one you want to service) services the alternator and water pump. The alternator tension is set by two (2) adjustment screws located on the alternator. One screw is used as a locking bolt and the upper bolt is used as the adjuster. You must first loosen the locking bolt which is located between the belt and the alternator housing. Loosen about 6 to 8 travels of the wrench (size 13mm), then tighten the upper bolt until you have no more than 1/2 inch of movement in the belt when you press down. After the correct tension is achieved, tighten the locking bolt and your done. As long as you're down there, you might as well check the outer belt as well. Same principle, one locking and one adjuster. Good Luck, Fred

I have a 2003 Kia Spectra that is not charging. It starts and runs. I replaced the alternator thinking that was it. The battery tests good. I read other answers that said to replace the 120A ALT fuse.

If there is other equipment in the car such as a high power amplifier or audio system, disconnect and see if it charges. Also check voltage on battery when you think you are at full charge. You may have a damaged cell inside the battery. Voltage should be around 12.8 to 13V dc.

How do I install the alternator on a 2003 KIA Spectra?

I just replaced the alternator on my 2003 Kia Spectra, not an easy job. It has to be removed from under the vehicle. First, after disconnecting the battery, remove the "locking" bolt on the topside of the alternator, along with the adjusting bolt (both metric 12mm). This is done from the topside, (rear, right side of the engine compartment). From under the vehicle, loosen the bolt that holds the alternator. At this point you have to decide whether to loosen the exhaust manifold or motor mount. I choose the motor mount. I loosened the mount and used a floor jack to raise the engine, only needed about an inch. Good luck.

My KIA Spectra 2004 battery charging system problem I need step by step help thank U.

The first step is to check all of the battery cables and their connections. Insure that they are CLEAN and TIGHT (visual and physical inspection should ALWAYS be FIRST).

When you are satisfied that there are no problems with corrosion or loose connections, then you must use a battery load tester to load test the battery. On modern batteries, It is also recommended that you use a battery analyzer that can test the battery impednce. Sometimes a battery will show High impedence - even if it can pass a "load" test. Replace the battery if tests indicate it is necessary.

Please note that the rest of the charging system cannot be properly tested until the battery and the cables are all in good working condition.
Any attempts to check the alternator and its circuits with bad cables or battery are going to be, at the very best, inaccurate

Once the battery connections and battery are in good working order, then the alternator output must be tested. It should be tested for voltage output both at idle and at high RPM with a load applied. It should be tested for maximum amperage output to see if it coinsides with the alternator's amperage rating. It should also be tested for AC current or "ripple", indicating shorted diodes.

If the alternator fails any of the tests, then either the alternator should be replaced or the alternator control and output circuits must be diagnosed and repaired (it depends on WHICH test or tests it fails).

Im wondering if i can put a 80 amp 14v alternator for replacement on my 03 kia spectra 1.8l bottom base model which came stock with 80amp 12v can i up the voltage without hurting the car

Your alternator output normally should fall around 14 volts to deliver a charge to your car battery. Car batteries can easily adapt to 2V, 10V and 50V from a battery charger and likewise an upgrade from 12V to 14V output would not hurt anything.

2002 kia spectra won't start. I got a jumpstart and it starteded but cut off after about 2 minutes and would not restart.

Sounds lie the battery is not getting charged by the alternator. If you slow charge the battery overnight and it retains a charge for a while then eventually dies, it may be good and the alternator needs to be replaced. If the battery does not hold a charge, you will need to replace the battery and have the alternator tested to see if it is faulty.
