My 2000 hyundai elantra has started having a problem when i try to fill the fuel tank. i can pump about a dollars worth the the pump will shut off and fuel will sometimes spurt out of the tank opening. if i pump the fuel really slowly i can fill the tank. but if i try to pump fast it acts like the tank is full and shuts off the pump. this problem just started.

Buy a new tank cap. Fill ur tank slower. Inspect the fill hose for akink or damage. And looknst the overflow vent line. Fuel caps keep air out they do need replacing once and a while. Ur take vents at the cap sounds like ur cap is not venting or ur return over flow line has issues try a new cap first. Then go deeper if issue still there chk the top of the tank where the gauge sending unit is. Etc etc.
try turning nozzle upside down and pull trigger when gasing, may just have to pull the gas lever slightly so the pump pumps slower, had to do that with past vehicles
well if she ran it to long with no oil it might be locked up and might be able to turn it over if its not to bad. but you should still get power going to your fuel pump i would check all connection going to fuel pump and no broken wires. try even un plugging battery to see if there's a bypass
Sorry , its probably inside the gas tank. If you are lucky , there will be an access panel under the back seat , or in the trunk. If not , the fuel tank has to be removed.
If it's anything like the 2000 Hyundai Accent (which it probably is) it is mounted on top of the gas tank. First make sure you have a tank that is less than half full (8lbs per gallon), then jack up the car and place jackstands in a secure place. Then place a jack and 2x4 under the tank. Remove the 2 straps and slowly lower the fuel tank, it's most likely on the passenger side on top of the tank.
do you get gas from the same gas station?
