Question about Pontiac Sunfire
A complete loss of acceleration.with a high pitched squealing sound. I managed to bring the RPM up to 1500 with a max speed of 5 mph. to do that I had to give full gas and work the clutch.
Sounds as if you may have a vacuum leak. Use a length of hose with one end in your ear and the other move around under hood to help locate the sound. BE CAREFUL TO AVOID SPINNING FAN AND OTHER OBJECTS. I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS PROCEDURE.

sounds like your fan clutch may be failing, remove the drive belt and manually spin all the pulleys by have listen for noise and feel for looseness in the bearings

SOURCE: RPM issue when accelerating
Is this an automatic transmission or a manual shift?
If manual shift, you have a clutch slipping problem.
If automatic, you still have a slipping problem.

I know i have the same problem, and i also noticed than when i open the Hood the whistle just stops, so i figure out it must be some air cycling in or out osmewhere, I found out my air intake connected to throttle body was misplaced a weird gap was left open allowing air to whistle. u might wanna check there
