I highly doubt it, those days are long gone. You would have a check engine light if it were running that poorly.

You have a chain in it, not a belt. It hasn't jumped a tooth or two. Guides could be worn. It would throw a code. But it wouldn't jump. Whta's the problem?

2 questions come to mind has the new sprocket got the same pitch ( distance between teeth ) as the crank shaft sprocket as this will make the chain jump out after a few degrees of movement. A quick check is to wrap the chain around the sprocket and see if there are links that do not sit fully around the teeth. There are different pitches for teeth and chains ( BA-- AM and metric)

Look for some Youtube videos on this repair. If I remember correctly the links on this chain have different color metal for the spots that the cam tooth goes against. When each side is in the proper tooth the right and left colored links will be on the cam mark and the crank mark should be on the timing TDC mark. Sounds like the slack you describe is wrong and a tooth is off because the tensioner is allowing slack.. You need to slip a tooth one way or the other until the tensioner has room to be in a neutral position.

Both the 2.2 and the 2.4 engines use a chain, not a belt.
A chain could still be faulty, but I doubt it would jump teeth unless the tensioner failed to keep it tight.

If all cogs and bearings are fine and that the chain tension is at specification then it should not be possible for the chain to ever jump a tooth. The amount of movement required by the chain to jump a tooth is considerable. I have only ever seen this as a result of an oversight when re-installing the chain after doing upper cylinder head work such as gasket replacement. Some models of vehicles with V6 engines that integrate the timing belt with driving the coolant pump can sometimes jump a tooth if the pump bearing fails. I would again check the chain tension once the timing chain is re-installed, even without tools you should be looking for a chain that is obviously taught. Not piano wire taught as this will lead to early failure but certainly one without any slackness or rattle. I have little experience of bike engines but the principles are the same

It's one of two things. The plug wires are not on in the correct firing order or your timing chain has jumped a tooth on the crank or cam sprocket. You need to remove the distributor cap and make sure there is not a plug wire crossed somewhere by following the firing order in the direction of rotation on the distributor. If not hook a timing light up and see what the timing is running at. If the timing chain jumped a tooth you will need to replace the timing chain. Most of the old timing gear sets had a nylon cover over the teeth and it chips off and or the chain stretches and then the chain cam jump a tooth on the gear and throw the valve timing off enough to where you have the problem you describe. If you have very high mileage probably the timing chain. Also for $250.00 bucks I would start with the garage that did the tune up and tell them there is a problem. See what they say. Hopefully they are an honest garage. Good luck.

Depends on miles or how hard an engine has been run over a period of time . Chains and belts stretch and they can jump if they get loose enough and have enough strain on them

chains are not like belts.... they are much tougher therefore last a hell of a lot longer...typically around 90,000 miles or more they should be looked at as they do eventually stretch and can jump time...they also have tensioners that can wear out causing the chain to jump a tooth, and a tell tale sign of this wear is indicated by noise coming from the timing chain case area.I have seen some 3.8 v/6 engines one in particular manufactured by Buick/Olds and installed in early CJ 5 Jeeps lasting over 200,000 miles...but sounding like a washing machine at idle from all the worn parts as well as some having a fiber type cam sprocket that wears out(used to help silence any gear slap noise)Hope this somewhat helps.
