Sounds like the EGR valve is stuck wide open. My 1965 impala 396 did this exact thing when its special laminated carb gasket with the exhaust passage burned out and let uncontrolled exhaust short circuit to the intake downstream of the carb.

Try to choke air at carburetor a little bit until it stall if rpm go up or running better then you have a vacuum leak ,or carburetor rebuild
hope it helps

You need to get two things checked. Ignition and Fuel.

Ignition: typically in this order ... Start off from sparking plugs ,,, move to leads (get them changed) and on to the ignition coil if there is no spark coming out of it. In case of fuel, the carb needs a clean and a good carb cleaner or fuel treatment (added to the fuel tank) wont do any harm. You should open up the carb filter. Remove it and change it if its dirty. Start the engine rev it up and while its revved up (throttle flap open) spray the carb cleaner or in this will clean the carb cleaner from inside. If the power gradually increases its a clear sign that you need to open up the carb and get the jets cleaned. properly.

Hope that this fixya will get you on the roads soon :)

Regards :)

a car that idles rough and clears up is the sure sign of an o2 sensor shorted this may not give a code if the short in the sensor is bad the computer will eliminate its input to protect itself

I added fuel additive to my fuel had timing chain done 2 days ago now It won't idle it dies and runs real rough at high RPM's. If you put it into drive gear kills motor.

Sounds like a spark plug or wire issue. Anytime the vehicle starts to skip, die, or (run rough) its usually these minor things. However if that does not help, start looking into your fuel system. Always try cheapest first. Plugs and Wires....Good luck...

Idles fine but spudders bad and wants to die when driveing

Sounds like your Plamath gasket. If its a Fuel injector system. Also could be a bad fuel pump not providing enough gas at high RPM.

My 1996 Ford F150 Super Cab wont start without stepping on the gas pedal and when you put it into gear it dies..please help!!

I would check your fuel pressure at the motor on the fuel rail see if you are getting enough pressure. The fuel filter might be getting plugged causing lack of fuel. If it seems to get enough fuel just won't stay at the proper rpm throttle positioning sensor on the intake might not be working properly.

I have a 1991 ford explorer 4.0L Eddie Bauer edition. The idle revs to 2000 rpm's and then will drop to no less then 1200 rpm's. If I give it the gas it dies whether I'm in gear or not but when I...

There are several problems and they are all related. Check plugs if they a white with gray ash buildup. Gap .054

1. Fuel pressure regulator, if it is ruptured fuel will be vacuumed straight into the the intake causing idle surge also in causes temperature fluctuation and poor performance. It will also cause lean running condition.
2. The Mass Airflow Sensor also has a huge impact on mixture, defective symptom was a knocking and clattering under load especially uphill. Cleaning will only give temporary fix.
3. Spark Plugs- Do not use Platinum plugs they run hotter than standard plugs!
4. Any intermittent starting problems are likely fuel pump related, when you turn the key in the ignition you should hear the pump running!!
5. Preventive maintenance is the key change your fuel filter at recommended intervals.

I have a 94 Explorer, it run very poorly after changing these items it runs great, restored power, idles great and great mileage again and finally no more temperature fluctuation.

2001 ford windstar lx too much gas odor ,changed spark plugs & wires, replaced all 4 oxigen sensors and catalytic converter.code detected says running too lean .

You have an Intake manifold leak or a leak in the fuelpressure regulator or fuel line. Most likely you need to check the Intake gasket with a water mist or Carb cleaner spray on the seams. Either one will produce a change in the RPM while the engine is running.

Also clear your computer, which I hope you did after changing all the parts you put on the van. When you get a Vacuum leak in the Intake, the fuel is not drawn into the cylinders properly and the ECU thinks the engine is running lean. The ECU orders more gas and the fuel regulator keeps dumping more gas in the engine.

Now you smell the excess gas, but the priority sensor overrides any secondary sensor saying its rich. The Evaporative Emissions system is flooded trying to reduce the fumes. In the end, you smell the excess gas.

Now both Autozone and Oreillys do free scans and their scanner may suggest more than what your scanner is showing. Check your Intake first, then scan it.

When starting, engine will rev up to 3000 rpm then will die. but you can keep it running if you keep it revved up above 3000 rpm

Things to look for: Could be your intake manifold gasket, throttle position sensor, vacuum hoses, throttle body gasket, idle screw, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, or maybe you have a split in your gas tank or fuel line(s) that is messing with your fuel pressure. See if you smell gas back near the driver's side rear wheel.

Good luck, those are things I would search for, I can't promise anything, could be a number of things. You should have a check engine light on.

1990 Jeep Wrangler: Dies out at low RPM's, at stoplights, backfire

It sounds like an intake air ( vacuum ) leak, or ignition timing. Was it doing this before you changed all the above? Or did it start after?
Check all the intake mounting bolts, and carb bolts for tightness. Use a lenght of fuel hose against your earto listen for leaks while the engine is running. A hissing sound will be heard if it's leaking. Wiggle all the hoses with the engine running. You might get lucky and make one hiss at you. A soapy water solution will also detect leaks. ( use hot).
It also could be a leaking egr, or plugged pcv valve, or air filter clogged, or leaking head gasket, bad timing chain, or your camshaft lobes could be worn.
You'll just have to keep looking, and stay calm. It'll feel good when you find it!

Very high idle using up to much gas can smell gas

it could be your throttle position sensor. it will be on the intake where your throttle body is located.

Dies when drive

My 99 Explorer would not run unless you held the pedal to the floor. Found out ford has a recall on their intake gaskets. If you see what the intake gaskets look like you'll wonder how the motor runs at all. I had that prob for 50,000 miles and I changed those gaskets and now it runs like a new ford.
