Get the new sensor. Disconnect battery. Find the old sensor near the crankshaft, remove the 2 bolts that hold it in place, disconnect the sensor from the plug. Replacement is the reverse

How do you remove and replace a crankshaft position sensor on a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 L engine

My info says it is located on rear of engine, sorry I don't have a picture of location. Three wire connector, wire colors white--yellow--pink.
There is a bolt that holds sensor, have to remove. Also, remove electrical connector.

Toyota hilux 3.0 D4D hard starting showing crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction code do i solve this...?

Check the connection to crank sensor, if wiring is good and connection is clean then replace the crank sensor and reset the code, this is the first step, the computer could be a problem also but most times its the crankshaft sensor. good day

Engin light is on when i check it by computer it gives me error P1336 [25,10,13,36] , please refer to relevant terchnical manual

The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn feature is used to calculate reference period errors caused by slight tolerance variations in the crankshaft, and the CKP sensors. The calculated error allows the powertrain control module (PCM) to accurately compensate for reference period variations. This enhances the ability of the PCM to detect misfire events over a wider range of engine speed and load.

The code P1336 is for a Crankshaft (CKP) and/or Camshaft (CMP) position sensor input signal to PCM concert. It is triggered if the input signal to the PCM for either of these sensors is erratic. Per the factory service manual, this can be due to:
- a damaged PCM
- damaged CKP sensor
- damaged CMP sensor
- base engine
- harness concerns.

The service manual suggests checking the following items:
- harness routings,
- alterations,
- improper shielding,
- or electrical interference from other improperly functioning systems.

To properly check the operation of the CMP and CKP, you'll really need an oscilloscope. The code is probably being triggered due to a faulty sensor or connection and not something that just needs to be reset.

3. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
Turn OFF the ignition.
Start the engine.
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
Does the DTC run and pass?
Yes: Go to Step 4
No: Go to Step 2

4. With a scan tool observe the stored information, Capture Info.
Does the DTC run and pass?
Yes: Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List
No: System OK

Diagnostic Aids:
The CKP system variation values are not stored in the PCM memory after a learn procedure has been performed. If the actual CKP variation is not within the CKP system variation compensating values stored in the PCM, DTC P0300 may set.

The CKP system variation learn procedure is also required when the following service procedures have been performed, regardless of whether DTC P1336 is set.
An engine replacement
A PCM replacement
A harmonic balancer replacement
A crankshaft replacement
Any engine repairs which disturb the CKP sensor relationship

If the CKP system variation learn procedure cannot be performed successfully, check for the following conditions and correct as necessary:
A damaged reluctor wheel
Excessive crankshaft runout
A damaged crankshaft
Interference in the signal circuit of the CKP sensor
A coolant temperature that is not within the Conditions For Running the DTC
The ignition switch is in the ON position until the battery is drained
A PCM power disconnect with the ignition ON may erase the stored value and set the DTC P1336

If you crawl under the front of your truck the crankshaft position sensor should be behind the harmonic balancer, in the bottom part of the timing chain cover, on the passenger's side. The Haynes manual #24065 gives you pictures as well as a step by step way of testing the sensor before you replace it. It also gives you a step by step on how to replace it.

How do you replace the crank position sensor?

  1. Park your Jeep safely away from traffic.
  2. Step 2 Open the hood and locate the (CKP) sensor to the left (driver side) of the transmission bell housing, where it meets the rear of the engine block. If necessary, shift the transmission to neutral (N), raise the front of your vehicle using a floor jack and safely support it on two jack stands. Chock the rear wheels.
  3. Step 3 Locate the CKP sensor pigtail connector to the right (passenger side) of the transmission bell housing. Unplug the CKP electrical connector.
  4. Step 4 Thoroughly clean the area around the crankshaft sensor using a soft brush and a shop rag.
  5. Step 5 Note whether the CKP sensor on your Jeep model is mounted with one bolt, two bolts or two nuts. If there is only one bolt, make a note of the exact sensor position, since it is adjustable and you will need to reinstall it in the same position.
  6. Step 6 Unscrew the sensor mounting bolt(s) or nuts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket of the appropriate size. If your Jeep model uses two mounting bolts, use the same bolts during the installation process. These bolts have been machined to provide the correct space between the crankshaft sensor and the flywheel. If you use bolts with a different configuration, your vehicle may not start or operate properly.
  7. Step 7 Remove the crankshaft sensor from your vehicle.

  8. Step 1 Thoroughly clean the sensor-mounting surface on the transmission bell housing using a soft brush and a shop rag.
  9. Step 2 Clean the mounting bolt(s) or nuts using the soft brush and shop rag.
  10. Step 3 Check the new crankshaft sensor and make sure it has a piece of paper (spacer) glued to the bottom. This spacer serves as an electrical ground. Using the CKP sensor without the spacer will break the unit the first time you try to start the engine. If necessary, you may buy the spacer through your local auto parts store or dealership parts department. Ask for part number PN05252229.
  11. Step 4 Install the new CKP sensor into the transmission bell housing mounting hole.
  12. Step 5 Start the two bolts or nuts by hand and then tighten them to 9-feet lb. (12 Nm) using a torque wrench, ratchet extension and socket. If your model has only one mounting bolt, push the new sensor against the flywheel and then tighten the bolt to 60-inches lb. (7 Nm) using a torque wrench, ratchet extension and socket.
  13. Step 6 Plug the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  14. Step 7 Lower your Jeep if you had to raise it. Remove the chocks from the rear wheels.

The CPS is located under the timming cover 4 small bolts remove the cover and the sensor is viewable 2 bolts have to be loosend and the wire leads up to a dual connector on the left side of the engine

Crankshaft Position Sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor


  1. Serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  3. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Right inner fender access cover.
  5. Using a 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Crankshaft harmonic balancer using tool J 38192 or equivalent.
  7. Sensor electrical connector.
  8. Foreign object deflector.
  9. Sensor and pedestal from block face.
  10. Sensor from pedestal.

  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
  2. Position the sensor with pedestal attached on special Tool J 37089.
  3. Position the special tool on the crankshaft.
  4. Bolts to hold the pedestal to the block face, torque to 20-40 Nm (14-28 lb.ft).
  5. Torque the pedestal pinch bolt to 3-4 Nm (38-40
  6. Remove special tool J 37089.
  7. Place the special tool 37089 on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
  8. Balancer on the crankshaft.
    • Apply thread sealer (GM 1052080) or equivalent to the threads of the balancer bolt.
  1. Torque the crankshaft bolt to 140 Nm + 56°(104 lb.ft + 56°).
  2. Foreign object deflector.
  3. Electrical connector.
  4. Inner fender shield.
  5. Tire and wheel assembly, torque to 140 Nm (104 lb.ft).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Serpentine belt.
