Question about 2005 Mercury Monterey
I have a 2007 Mercury Monterey and used the liftgate in the morning for groceries. Went outside later in the day to put sports equipment in and it opened and then dinged a few times and closed. It did this a few times and then would not open electronically. I turned the electronic button off and decided to open and close it manually and it would not stay open unless I help it up (this is heavy!). Went to use it manually the next day and the handle came out in my hand. Now the door will not open at all.
Do Not take it to the dealer !!! There is a recall on the liftgate module and when I took mine in they "crashed" the module. They said it was may problem, wanted $500 to fix it and the problem was bad 'Struts'. They should be reoplaced as a pair for around $60

The lift arms need to be replaced. There are 2 hydraulic "shocks" that hold the door open. Your local auto parts supplier will have them in stock. I was able to get away with replacing only 1. The one on the passenger side was completely gone there was no pressure left in it all. They are VERY easy to replace, but they are a little pricey. Shop around NAPA, Autozone, will have widely varied prices on them.
