Code p0040 refers to oxygen sensor signals swapped , bank 1 sensor 1 / bank 2 oxygen sensor 1===causes --wiring problems . Check that the wiring connections on the ECM or swapped on the sensors or wrong sensors in the system. One will be HO2S and the other is a O2S

Unfortunately, you did not provide a year and a model and I cannot give you a precise response

Translation:

P0040 Upstream Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) Swapped From Bank To Bank

Your heated oxygen sensor is not properly transmitting data to your PCM (onboard computer), You'll need a code scanner that you can borrow for free from AutoZone.

All the best,

Ben
