I know why. Toyota issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) dated September 8, 2003 applicable to all models, including yours. The bulletin specifies removal of the original DLC3 (OBDII connector cable) and installation of a controller area network (CAN) interface module. You may have to take your ECHO to a Toyota dealer to accomplish this.

SOURCE: Code P0401 1998 Toyota Camry

I'm assuming that it is a four cyl.The p0401 code is for insufficient egr flow. Most of the time it is the egr vsv valve (vsv means vacuum switching valve)which is what controls the vacuum to the egr valve to open it.It is kind of hard to get to as it is on the block under the head on the back side.If you follow the hose from the egr valve it goes to the vsv.I have also seen mice eat holes in the vacuum line which would also give you problems.I hope this help and let me know if you have anymore questions

Some errors will come right back. Some may stay out for a while. I knew someone that got his check engine light cleared right before testing. It would come back about a week later. Don't know what it was.

What could be wrong with my Toyota Echo if the engine chugs while idling, and the car loses power when accelerating (stalling out if accelerating too quickly)?

There are numerous things that will cause this problem. If the check engine light is on, have the codes checked to see if there is a problem the computer has found to cause this issue. Even without the check engine light on, there may be a code stored. You can also do a visual inspection under the hood for any disconnected hoses causing vacuum leaks. These are the best places to begin with diagnostics

I have a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE. The battery died with the check engine light on. We took it in to get the smog certification (California) and the tech said that the computer was not reset. He advised us to...

The vehicle owner does not do drive
cycles,a repair shop should do that

Do you even know what the drive cycle
requirement was?

Have you not considered a repair shop
& some testing, to find out about the dead
battery & check engine light issue?

You don't go to inspection when you know
you have problems, nor until you look at scan
tool data, to see that all the monitors have run
& are clear, just waste your time at inspection

Reset the check engine light to pass inspection

You may be able to disconnect the battery for a couple of hours to clear the trouble codes, but the correct method is to use a scanner or code reader. The light will stay on as long as trouble codes are stored in the computer.

OBD2 works for getting codes causing check engine light.
Cannot communicate to NYS DMV to receive inspection.
It will pass inspection. No check engine lights or codes. Problem is communication with inspection machine.

I still do not know the answer to the problem.

The yellow light described as check is on , why would the light not go off?

Sounds like that's the "check engine light". There are trouble codes that exist in the computer and the light will not turn off until there are no trouble codes. If the light came on, that means there is a problem with some system on the car. You need to have the codes pulled to find out what you need to fix. Autozone does this, free. You can also take it to a professional mechanic. They can pull the codes, repair the problem and delete the codes. Hope this helps.

2003 toyota echo shakes at stop light Get's worse when you turn on the air conditioner. Doesn't do it in park or with brake off.

Idle sounds like it's too low. This is controlled by the computer. Is the check engine light on?
Make sure your tune up is up to date.
