The onboard computer, or Powertrain Control Module (PCM),is the brains of the engine control system, so when the brain is not functioning correctly neither is the engine or anything else that the microprocessor controls - which may include the charging system, transmission, various emission controls and communications with other onboard control modules. Once a diagnosis has been made (and we emphasize the word diagnosis), then and only then should the PCM be replaced.

If you see any of these codes when diagnosing the vehicle with a code reader or scan tool, it may mean the PCM has failed and must be replaced. Additional diagnostic tests will usually be necessary to confirm the problem is really the powertrain control module and NOT something else. Refer to the OEM diagnostic charts for what these tests are. Usually it involves checking certain inputs to the PCM to see if it outputs the correct response. No response or an incorrect response usually means the PCM is defective and needs to be replaced.
All too often, technicians tend to blame that which they understand least. If an engine is not running right and the cause is not obvious, they may blame the computer. Throwing parts at a problem in an attempt to solve it may be good for the parts business, but when a customer brings a PCM back because it failed to fix their problem, nobody wins. Warranty returns on complicated and expensive components like powertrain control modules are an ongoing problem that costs everyone money.
UNNECESSARY POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE RETURNS. Over 50 percent of PCMs that are returned under warranty (either because the PCM failed to fix a performance problem or because the engine did not run properly after it was installed) have nothing wrong with them! So it is obvious a lot of people are swapping computers to see if a different PCM will fix their problem.
The trouble with returns is if the PCM has been on the car, you have no way of knowing if it is still "good" or not. Somebody may have crossed up some wires, zapped the PCM with too much voltage or who knows what? The computer needs to be tested and verified before it can go back on the shelf and be sold to somebody else.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way of doing that in a parts store. The PCM has to be hooked up to a sophisticated simulator that exercises all of the computer's input and output circuits to make sure it works correctly - which means the PCM has to go back to the supplier, be retested, and if no fault is found, repackaged and put back into stock.
Be warned, though, that many parts stores have a policy of "no returns or refunds on electronic components."

If your vehicle has a cigarette lighter check the fuse. Many older vehicles had the pcm-tcm etc. in the same circuit as the cig. lighter.

check the battery terminals and posts are shiny clean and tight. Have a load test done on the battery to check for a cell bridge failure.

My 2009 Compass won't start/crank; no communication with PCM but scanner will communicate with TCM and ABS module


Double check the fuses (Inside the car and on engine bay), there is a fuse for the OBDII linkageand sometimes it works together with other systems (Power Outlets, Stereo, Switch, etc). A bad PCM would also cause that but is not very likely.

The description for fault code P1698 is "No CCD Messages Received From PCM" The CCD bus is the circuit that your computer system uses to communicate between the computers. There are several Computers in your vehicle. You didn't mention year or model or engine size, so I can't be specific, but most have at least an Powertrain Control Module (PCM) computer, Transmission Control Module (TCM) computer, an Antilock Brake System (ABS) computer, a Passive Restraint (Air Bag) computer and the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) when one of these computers are unable to communicate through the CCD Bus, the other computers will tell on it. Thus, code P1698.

This can be an internal fault in the PCM (not very likely) it can be a shorted or open CCD Bus circuit, or it could be caused by the PCM losing one of its power or ground circuits and momentarilly shutting down. If your instrument cluster is also having problems like you described, the problem is most likely a power or ground circuit malfunction. The rest of your computers need to be scanned to assist in pinpointing the actual cause of this code. The "Generic OBD" scanners that they use to sell parts with at the auto parts stores do not have the capability to scan your ABS, IPC, Air Bag, or other modules. They can also not access the "Vehicle Specific" side of your PCM. They can only scan the "Generic" codes that are output by the PCM. Again, this is most likely caused by an open or shorted circuit or even a malfunctioning ignition switch - something is most likely causing the PCM, the TCM or the IPC to lose power while you are driving.

Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine started; vehicle driven in a forward gear, and the PCM detected that the O/D Pressure Switch circuit indicated open or closed at the wrong time.

Possible Causes:

  • Related DTCs may be present
  • O/D pressure is incorrect, or internal transmission faults exist
  • O/D pressure switch circuit is open, shorted to ground or power
  • O/D pressure switch is damaged or it has failed
  • TCM relay power circuit to O/D switch is open (loss of B+)
  • Intermittent wiring or connector problems exist
  • PCM or TCM has failed

The code P1698 is: No CCD messages from TCM. That means the communication between the Transmission Control Module and the Power Control Module is lost. Sometimes this happens when a PCM, or TCM is replaced without being flashed, a bad connection at the PCM, TCM, or a bad TCM. Hope this helps.

My inspection failed for P1698 emmission....what is that code for??????


"your code is a communication loss code between the TCM and the other module(s). It's not uncommon for the wiring problems to develop in the harness that runs from the PCM in frt of the battery to the TCM on the Pass side inner fender. Look around where the harness is tie strapped to the trans pan. it's commonfor the wires to break or be fullof water especially after somebody has had the pan off or the tranny has been removed for repair. Can also be a wiring problem right at the PCM or TCM connector or the TCM itself
although not as likely as a wiring issue.
when communication is lost the transmission will go into limp mode which is 2nd gear and stay there. Sometimes it will come back every time the van is shut off. Not an easy fix but on the plus side not an overly expensive one if you're gonna tackle it yourself. You'll need a scanner that will give you input and output speed sensor readings and a wiring diagram. TCM's should be reasonably cheap used or even new, not sure haven't priced one in forever and the wrecking yard are full of them and even the connector(s) should they be required"
