Question about 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

99 VW not starting

My daughter has a 1999 VW bettle and my husband was driving to work to replace the cooling fans today when all of a sudden the car died. When he went back to pick the car up after letting it cool down, the car would not start, they tried jumping it and still nothing. I was told the other day while she was driving the car it overheated and it died then too, and she had to leave it on the side of the road tillit cooled off to drive it home. That is when we found out the fan on the driver side is not working.

You need to check the engine all over when the engine over heats it very hard on it and could melt wiring and plastic parts after you check that look at the relays if the fan is out one of the relays may be out and you would need to replace it

SOURCE: car overheating

Good chance. The temp sensor in the radiator could not be reading correctly. Or the fan control module is on its way out.

SOURCE: overheated 2000 vw beetle

does it sound like there is any compression. remove cover on the right side that covers t-belt see if belt might have broken. if cooling system failed could have blow fuse for cooling fans. causing overheating.

SOURCE: test radiator cooling fans

Hello,

they should come on at app. 90 deg. celsius (190 F) .

It is a common problem with the beetle, the cause is a malfunction in the cooling control module.

The module is surveilled by the on board diagnosis system, so you should bring the car to the shop and let them run some tests with the diagnosis computer.

SOURCE: 2004 Jetta GLS. Main cooling fan remains on after car turned off.

"Already had replaced: both cooling fans, fan control module, coolant temp sensor, fan switch, 4 terminal connectors. No trouble codes reported in VW electronic diagnostic test. 2 different VW dealers and and my mechanic threw in the towel. Any suggestions greatly appreciated."

This is a common problem with the VW..and no one has an answer WHY. (including VW mechanics)

THIS IS A RECALL ISSUE and should be implemented

What does the check engine flashing mean on a 99 vw bettle?

typically any flashing light is a misfire, which could create cat convertor failure.
codes will be something with 300 via 301 cyl 1, 302 cyl 2 etc. Many things can
cause this via plugs, wires, coolant temp sensor, maf and so on. Suggest getting
it checked out asap.

SOUND LIKE BAD THERMOSTAT REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP..BUT YOU NEED TO MIX 50/50 MIXTURE OF ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN THE COOLING SYSTEM TO RAISE BOILING TO KEEP CAR FROM OVERHEATING.

He can if it's nothing more than a broken cable, otherwise it gets real difficult. Even getting to the ends of the cable behind the dash could be a frustrating experience.

1999 VW Bug Service engine Light

When you say water light comes on, do you mean coolant level, or coolant temp or ? Check coolant level and top off if needed. Bring the Beetle to a parts store, most offer free check of check eng. light. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port (usually located under the dash) and 'read' stored engine codes in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest what to do. If you have further questions, post them here along with the code numbers.
