Question about Saturn SW2
1998 Saturn SW2 Problem occurs only when engine is warm and in park - then idle speed will occasionally jump to 3000 rpms. Tapping gas peddle will sometimes reset it back to 1000 if not then the engine must be turned off to reset. Any ideas on what to check or additional info needed to help with diagnosis would be appreciated. Thanks
Probably accelerator/fuel mix sensor? Check the codes at a parts store like Pep Boys, Should indicate the bad boys

sound very much like a vacuum leak.... also maybe your timing is off? possibly advanced? try retarding it with the distributor if thats the case...

Because the car has adaptive technology, it may take a while to reset and adjust to the new, cleaner and better conditions than those to which it had previously adapted.
Did you change the cap and rotor? if the plugs needed replacement, likely they do too
Possible other causes include:
loose or corroded connections to any electrical component you disturbed (make a checklist and tick them all off as you check them);
mis-reinstallation of any F.I. part disturbed(checklist again)
obstructed water flow through the AIC valve;
improper voltage output from the AIC valve (for LH 2.4 systems, should output 8 volt at idle, dropping as load increases; for LH 2.4.2 system output 7 volt at idle etc; testing between terminals)33 and 17 at disconnected LH connector;
possible problem with MAF.
Hope this helps

I had the exact same problem on my 04 GC. I put some Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner in from Wal-Mart and it seemed to fix the problems right away. Let me know.

the engine management system is trying to find correct idle speed/no fuel (when you take your foot of the gas above 850 rpm no fuel goes into the engine.help economy/egr system to burn off.try using a higher/lowe octane fuel to see if any change occurs.also try a gas treatment like unwins/redexe

Testimonial: "Hi I tried your suggestion on gas treatment and it seems to be working.I noticed in the actual owners manual it says to use 91 or higher octane gas."
Check for air leaks in the vacuum pipes in and around the inlet manifold, they have a habit if going brittle and splitting.
Another possibility is the temp sender , if the ecu thinks the engine is too cold it will compensate causing the engine to " hunt". This can be something as simple as a worn radiator cap seal letting air into the cooling system and tricking the sensor.
Hope this helps, Marshall
