Hard steering I have a 2008 Volvo xc90 v8 and the steering is good to start out but a few miles down the road it gets tough and at lower idle the steering is tough and the pump groans. I would have already replaced pump but it steering fine at times. So I am wondering about the variable assist and is that something that could cause this due to the fact the pump must be working some of the time?

The pump may not be working as and is now under stress caused sometimes by the power steering pipes braking down on the inside of the pipe. You will have to replace the pump and check the pipes from the power steering pump.

Hi verlin
the problem that you have is the power steering fluid, the pump pressure goes down as the fluid gets hot this will cause the steering to get tough, I advise you to change the power steering fluid, make sure not to use ATF type, the recommended fluid type for your Volvo is PENTOSIN CHF11S. check your owner manual.
Good Luck

You should investigate the rack and pinion. If you know that your pump is working there is a very, very good chance your rack and pinion are faulty.

SOURCE: Remove the steering wheel or airbag from a 2004 Volvo XC90?

You need a steering wheel puller. You may be able to rent this from your parts house. Disconnect the battery for no less than 1/2 hour before disconnecting the air bag or the air bag could deploy. Place air bag facing up or it could become a projectile if set off.

SOURCE: 2004 volvo xc90 rough idle at stop

If the idle problem occurred after replacing the plugs, double check your work. Make sure you installed the coils correctly and that you didn't pinch the coil wiring under the top engine cover. I would also be wary of anything other than the OEM plugs. I've seen too many issues from using aftermarket plugs on these engines.

Steering wheel moves side to side and up and down, there is also a groaning sound when turning corners

It sounds like the steering column bearings are loose or worn out, a full tear-down and inspection is required before any parts are replaced, it may be easier to just buy a good used steering column.
