Water circulation I replaced the thermostat, water pump and the coolant sensor, now heater doesn't get warm if I am not riding, car doesn't run hot but water is not circulating

You need to bleed the air out of the cooling system. Google a search of the way to do this.

I installed my new thermostat and it doesn't seem like the heater in the car is getting warm. I let it run for about 10 minutes. Is this a concern?

Does the temp gauge read normal. You might have to backflush the heater core.

What would cause it to run hot and the heat stop working at the same time?


I've seen cars run hot and the heater not work for the following reasons:

1. The radiator is frozen solid and the coolant can't circulate.
*** The fix, get the car into a warm garage and let the ice in the radiator melt. Once done, add the correct mix of antifreeze so it doesn't happen again.

2. The water pump is not working and the coolant isn't circulating.
*** The fix, replace the water pump and adjust antifreeze mix.

Make sure the reservoir coolant tank is at 'full'. Start the car from cold and observe. After a couple of minutes when the engine has begun to drop in revs ( the coolant temperature sensor should tell the ECU to begin to shorten the injection cycle as the engine warms) the top of the engine and the coolant passage to the thermostat housing should become warm to the touch. When hot the top rubber hose to the radiator should become warm and then hot as coolant begins to circulate. If the top hose fails to get hot at any time then the thermostat is at fault. If you have electrically driven radiator fans these should now come on. If they fail to come an at all you need to check the coolant temperature sensor, the electrical motor fuses and the motor relay. Lastly check the motor itself (just run a 12v supply to it directly). As the ar continues to idle, with the fans running, the bottom return hose from the radiator to engine should also become warm. If the bottom hose fails to become warm this points to circulation problems. Either the radiator had become clogged with rust sludge and needs an extensive flushing out with a high pressure hose or the pump is not functioning as it should. Quickly check that the interior heater works by asking for 'full heat with fan on full'. If the interior heater works this indicates that the main coolant pump is probably OK. To check the thermostat more thoroughly, remove it from the car and drop it in a pan of near boiling water; the 'stat should pop open. As the pan cools, at 88 degree centigrade or so, the 'stat should pop closed. Failure to observe this tells you the 'stat is a dead and needs to be renewed.

could be waterpump?
i was going to say rad fan,but if so heater would be hot.
lack of coolant will make heater core to blow cold,if engine heats up with full coolant,usually means poor or no circulation.
water pump?
run engine with full coolant,at operating temp.with rad cap off and look in rad cap hole and see if there is movement of water inside rad.
[rad fan will not come on if water is not circulating through rad water pump?]

No hot air from heater, blower runs fine


The heater in your car depends upon a flow of hot coolant going through the heater core in order to get hot air into the car. If the heater core is partially plugged, it will restrict the flow. If you have a head gasket that is putting exhaust into the cooling system, it will eventually get into the heater core. When this happens there is no coolant in the heater core to make the air warm. If the water pump vanes have corroded away the result will be very poor coolant circulation causing the heater to not blow hot air. If your car is equipped with a heater control valve that is not functioning properly, the coolant flow will be restricted. One or a combination of these factors is likely the culprit in your case.

Since you state the 2 things you ruled out, that leaves only the water pump. Is the car running hot? The thermostat may be sticking as well... but im leaning toward the pump.

the solution to your problem is simple. yes you say that it has a new water pump, but the reason that a vehicle bubbles out of the expansion tank is because the water pump is not circulating coolant, the coolant boils in the engine and bubbles out of the expansion tank. secondly the reason the fan never kicks in is because the temp sensor is not seeing the heated coolant because the water pump is not circulating the coolant through the cooling system. 3rd. the heater never gets hot because the water pump is not circulating coolant through the heater core in order for it to get hot and provide heat. and the temperature gauge never seems to go up because yup you guessed it, the water pump isnt circulating coolant in order for the engine temperature sensor to see hot coolant and thus send a signal to the engine temperature gauge as to the coolant temperature. i know you said it has a new water pump, but i have heard that this type of vehicle may come with a plastic fin pump. i would remove the pump and check the passages for foreign matter{ trash} in the passages as well as the condition of the new pump. also one last thing, the reason the vehicle died on the road in the first place was probably because it overheated. happy hunting and please post to see what you found. i am a mechanic by proffession.

Heater and defroster cold


Sounds like a circulation problem could be the thermostat or a water pump issue, Ive had a similar problem on my Ford Taruas a couple of years ago. I replaced the thermostat and the problem was still there,so I replaced my water pump later. During my inspection of the old pump after removal I had noticed a few of the fins on the internal part of the pump were missing. This probably didnt allow the pump to circulate the coolant fast enough through the system. After replacing the pump and thermostat my problem went away, I hope this helps.

um...strange ...engine temp reaches 210 before thermostat opens and lets water circulate ..fans go on before that normally..180 or so..hot air from heater going to cold air? strange...could you elaborate for me /us?
