2003 Chevy needs transfer case replaced for the 2nd time

My 2003 Chevy silverado had the transfer case replaced at 56,000 miles. Now it needs to be replaced again at 106,000 miles. No one can tell me what causes this or if anything can be done to prevent it. Any ideas?

I just had my transfer case rebuilt on my 2002 2500 silverado duramax. They told me that the spring that holds the pump inplace in the transfer case wore a hold through the case. He said this was common on these transfer cases. Chevy has not acknowledge the problem. He designed a steel plate, with flanges that holds the pump in place and will not wear a hole in the case again. And as far as the post to engage it once a month, the chain turns even when in 2WHL drive.

I have a 2004 chevy silverado 1500 with 4x4 on the floor. its approaching 100,000 miles and i belive the transfer case is what is making noise, because i hear grinding/clunking when it shifts (when it is...

i would recommend that you check your fluid level in your transfer case. i have a 2003 chevy 1500 4wd and lost my transfer case. all of the fluid was slowly lost due to a hole punched in the case by an internal ring. this is a known problem caused by the aluminum ring creating a hole in the softer magnesium case. if you have lost your fluid it is likely that your transfer case is bad. this could be the cause of the grinding you are hearing, likely your driveshaft will be loose at the rear output shaft. you may also have problems in your speedo gauge because of the loose driveshaft. if the transfer case is bad it is likely you will need to replace it. (not cheap) there are some after market parts that can be added to the transfer case to prevent the hole from being punched if the case is not already bad. check out http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/np261.html they have the after market parts and a better explanation.

1999 chevy silverado service 4 wheel drive light

I had a similar problem with the Service 4 Wheel Drive light which came on intermittently then became more consistent in the message center display. It would go into 4 wheel drive if the message center did not display the Service 4 Wheel Drive message in the message center, but not when the message was displayed. I found the transfer case switch module in the dash was defective, and it has been working with no other problems for three years.

Silverado makes weird noise at 70 mph. Mechanic said it's the transfer case and also found a leak therein - wants $400 to take it apart to find the problem or we can just replace. Not sure what to do - pay...

It's probably the chain in the transfer case. I had mine replaced at 150,000 miles and it cost $1500.00 to do a full rebuild. And that included them removing and installing the transfer case and a new yoke for the driveshaft.( Because the play in the transfer case grooved the old one.)

changing transmission is very difficult and requires a lift. this may not have been occurring when they changed transfer case and they will not cover it unless you have proof this occurred before warranty expired. another option is a used transmission
