Neutral safety switch

Swapped out my motor and transmission out of my wife's wrecked 2003 kia sorento. The car would start and drive it was a Tbone situation and bent the frame so I got another same year as hers but more options. The his vehicle had an engine fire and burnt part of the harness, no problem harness is the same pretty much just a few minor differences. I pulled the engine and transmission as one unit out of my wife's car and installed it in the new vehicle after doing the wiring harness change. Oh yea and ECU and TCU also. Everything works fine on the car, all lights, horn, sunroof, seats, like I said everything EXCEPT...... When I try to start the car the dash is showing the transmission is in 2nd gear before I even put my foot on the brake. When I put my foot on the brake the P for park also lights up. After reviewing the wiring diagram I could see where due to the way it is wired the brake light switch and park light wire connections are side by side on the comp. There may be a connection there and it could be feeding the P light when I put the brake on. Anyway when I try to start the engine the starter will not engage, nothing. I can spray a little ether in it and short the starter and it will start for a second then that's it. I really need to tighten down the motor mounts and double check the engine grounds most likely. I am usually better than the average bear on electrical, mechanic for 30 years retired due to back injury now so it's a little hard to do this and it takes weeks to do what I could have done in an afternoon before. I am just wondering if because of my back medication which dulls my brain a tad if I am over looking something obvious. I can shift the transmission and it will shift to neutral but regardless of the gear it is the same story 2nd gear showing foot on brake and park light comes on at the same time as the 2nd gear light. I guess I need to get help and check for voltage to the neutral safety switch and the ground also while they operate the transmission and key. I believe I already have done this with just the key on and no service voltage to switch was there if it was I could have used a jumper and tested the starting circuit and switch from there. Any thoughts from any other un medicated people welcomed. I would just try an adjustment on the switch but it shouldn't have changed and if it had I should be able to find neutral or park somewhere on it. They want 300-400 for a new switch which is BS especially for people on a fixed income. It's her only way to go and she has been with out it for a year my 16 year was the one that wrecked it go figure.

    Sorry , The Switch is definitely not getting supply voltage to be able to determine which gear it is in and there is no voltage on any other lines on that connector. I have started working from the other end and the 10 amp fuse ( ign ) by the drivers kick panel has good voltage and amperage on the supply side but if you leave the fuse in you can tell there is a short to ground. I pulled the fuse and sure enough the test light lit up medium brightness when it should have been dead. I get a chance I will trace that . I have all the schematics for the vehicle it\'s just they are pretty bad so far as professional schematics go. There may be a couple of problems but I think when I find that short it is going to solve a couple of other issues. Always look for a common factor. The fuel gauge and the temp gauge are reading with the key off but when you turn it on they drop out so the common there is the ground according to the schematics. I\'d be willing to bet that if I got some one to turn the key while I stood by the fuel pump I wouldn\'t hear it click on either. Had a couple of pretty days but could only mess with it for a bit before the old back and neck , oh yea forgot to mention I hat I broke my neck also. LOL my spine looks like a dang snake. Yea when you press the brake with the key on the P light comes on with the 2nd gear light you let off the brake and it goes out. But like I mentioned before if you opened up the computer box I suspect there is just a jumper across those connectors inside. I do know it\'s not the ECU or the TCU because I tried the old set also with the same results and finding the short on the down side of that 10 amp fuse is a great lead. I\'m always willing to listen what someone might think is stupid may be the exact the that turns the light on in my head. I use to annoy drivers when they would call me at 3 AM broke down and I would ask them questions then they would start to get mad so I would have to explain to them I would rather talk for 3o minutes and hear one word that would turn the light on than crawl all over a truck and trailer for 4 hours for the same or less results. The was it raining question when it happened always made them a tad bit irritated. Thanks for the help If we do find it I will be sure to pst it. Sort of like a good mystery novel huh? LOL

    Little at a time Bro little at a time, between the rain storms, kids, back, etc. and the I\'m getting tired of looking at this I just haven\'t worked on it a lot. I did get out there the other day though and unbolted the panel box that holds the relays and the fuses in the engine compartment and started tracing wiring a little. Found out that the illumination fuse wiring must have something crossed as the light ring is on all the time if the battery is hooked up whether the key is in it or not. Pulled that fuse and it went out. Also the memory fuse is in line with some of the wiring problem. But anyway I\'ve got a spare box and have all the fuses and relays out running continuity test to determine which pin is really connected to what fuse or relay position then I can compare the wire color on the harness to the wire color on the wiring schematic. The pain in the butt is on some systems they use collored wires but if there are multiple wires of the same color then they are also numbered well on this system they aren\'t so You may have 6 wires that are red with a black stripe going to the bottom row of a connector and 4 of them on the bottom and two on the top row go to the same point so they are common but then you have the rest that are the same color boing where ever. It\'s just one of those set ups where it\'s going to take a lot of time tracing and checking until you find the culprit because the wiring schematic for these vehicles are so freaking cut up that you couldn\'t even print them all out and piece them together to get one large one. LOL. But hey that\'s what happens when you are on medication that makes you tired and stupid and you have to rewire a wiring harness including routeing pin locations. A day here a day there the wife has been ticked at my son and myself for so long a few more days doesn\'t matter anymore I would like to get through with it . I want to build a small version of a potato gun to shoo rotten duck eggs at teen agers that run up and ring by door bell at night. LOL Just made a 4 barrel burner/ smoker out of 4 55 gallon drums and a barrel heater kit from tractor supply. City says you can\'t ue burn barrells anymore because they don\'t have flame arresting smoke stacks so I got 4 drums with the removable clamp on tops and cut the solid bottoms out welded them together put my drum heater kit on them and a smoke stack with a top vent cover like for a house. Two drums on bottom two on top laying on their sides,, I can burn what ever i want in the botton or both drums and load the from both ends because they have the clamp on tops. Perfectly legal by city code because they said it doesn\'t apply to BBQ\'s or smokers. You culd smoke a whole hog in the top barrell with your wood burning in the bottom because the bottom feeds into the top one or maybe a half a cow. LOL There are always ways around idiotic city ordanances. I\'ll try to keep you all posted on the wiring I may go out there this evening or in the morning for a bit. Thanks for asking.

    OK, and keep up the good fight- with the city, I mean. Nearest city to me is Great Falls MT, about 120 mi. away-read they outlawed people keeping chickens on their own property, so no fresh eggs for them. Sounded stupid to me, they have to remove their coops and cages, and get rid of their chickens-some are fighting the law.

Maybe your TCU is delusional? Doesn't sound like a new switch would help if no voltage was present. When you turned key on to check the switch, did you also press the brake and turn on the P light also?
I'm wondering if the TCU turns the gear lights on, or if the tcu or pcm thinks it really is in second gear? Sorry if I only added to your befuddlement.

You need to have the keys programmed to the new ECU. WIthout doing this, everything except the fuel pump will operate.

you did not apply vasoline to a nylon washer to keep it in place during assembly. the washers is out of place and will cause this problem
in the old rear wheel drive gm cars if this was done at least you had 1st gear only.

your linkage might need adjustment would not advise to bypass switch as it will start in ANY GEAR AND MIGHT CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH suggest replacement of safety switch not that expensive

Where is the neutral safety switch located on a manual transmission for a 2003 KIA Spectra

I am by no means an expert on Kias. That being said, i would think there wouldn't be a NEUTRAL safety switch on a manual transmission.

There should however be a CLUTCH pedal safety switch that will keep the starter from engaging unless the clutch pedal is depressed.

That switch should be located under the dashboard attached to a bracket near the top of the clutch pedal swing arm.

2003 Kia Sorento 4 wheel drive will not disengage

Best way to fix it is to lift one side of the car using a jack. Get front and back wheels off the ground. Then put the car into neutral and out of four wheel drive into 2 wheel high ratio. Start the car and rev it up to about 3000rpm for a short while. It should then release the four wheel drive.
It gets stuck mainly because of transmission wind up. Ie tension in the transmission.

I changed the motor and transmission from one to the other .I went from and automatic to a 5 speed manual changed motor harness now the car will not start turn key and nothing new battiery can you give me...

If you swapped out the auto for a manual trans the car might have a neutral start safety switch preventing the starter from engaging. This would not be something you would have on a manual transmission. Instead the manual would have the Clutch Safety switch which will only allow the starter to engage if the clutch is pressed in. On an automatic it won't allow the engine to turn over unless it's in Park or Neutral. I would locate the plug for the neutral start safety switch for the old automatic transmission and bypass it.

My Kia 2003 sorento model won't start fuel pump is working correctly and all electrical lines are working correctly the crankshaft censor was changed and enough spark is at the sparkplugs and still it...

To reset any car's ECU (not cpu) disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery for at least 15 minutes. Also if its not attempting to at least turn over, check your neutral saftey switch

P0355....Ignition Coil E Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction would suggest you need to replace your coil packs. Heat damages them after time and will eventually lead to misfire and very rough running motor especially when it's damp out.

P0700....Transmission Control System Malfunction

I would start researching the possibility of a bad ground, a loose main cable to the battery, etc. If the codes come back, the P0700 can be very serious and could require attention at a Transmission shop or dealership. There is a remote possibility that the codes are entirely unrelated.
