The first thing to do is to check the fluid level of the transmission.
The next would be to take it to a mechanic that you know, for inspection and cost estimate.

Sounds like the reverse band or servo has gone out. Transmission shop needed for a confirmation.

Sounds like your Transfer Case is Failing Internally

put car in reverse, while rolling set parking break, this will adjust the shoes out, to hold it. Be sure not to set it too many times it will lock wheels down.

You have a failed automatic transmission. You will need to remove and replace it or have it rebuilt.

Change your fluid and filter and see if that helps,and put a can of lucas in it

Is the stick moving? or is it 'stuck' in the reverse position as well? There are adjustments but it seems more likely that your 'stick' has come unstuck from the gear levers that actually put the gears in the right spot. Have someone look at the transmission while you move the stick to see if the levers are moving and put your response here.
