We bought a 2001 Chevy Cavalier for our son. The prior owner said it needed a fuel pump and serpantine belt. Replaced both, and filled small hole in antifreeze resevoir and car started but ran hot. Took for a test drive and the gage dropped and everything seemed ok. Even though the gage was ok, the fix on the resevoir didn't hold and started steaming. Re-fixed the hole and now the car won't start. Got a new battery and now it still won't turn over. It sounds like it wants to, but just won't. Any ideas?

Sorry, the prior owners said a WATER pump and belt, not a fuel pump. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Also now the car is giving off a strange odor when starting - definately not gas smell.

Wow, thats a tough one! Even after the cars been hot, it should start a couple hours later...if not...my guess is you've got the car knocked out of "time" somehow. Time to take it to the mechanic :O(

1996 chevy cavalier and 2001 chevy cavalier fuel pump interchageable

In the book a 96 model only fits 96-98 cars.
But the actual pump may be the same. You get an assembly including float and lines when you buy a new part.
You may be able to look at a new assembly for each year and tell if the actual pumps are the same style.

Trace the power source from fuse to relay etc and make sure pump is working. if all checks out then check pump working and for preasue at engine. you may have a dammaged fuel line from the tank which would also cause the same problem

You would need to check to make sure you have spark coming from the coil. Make sure you have fuel spraying from the fuel pressure valve. Make sure the distributor cap is not damaged and you have the correct timing set for the spark plugs, consult owners manual.
