The starter is located underneath the intake manifold. It is replaced from the bottom of the car.

Do you know what the relay switch is ?
The starter motor solenoid relay switch:
  • controls current to the starter solenoid.
  • is engaged by the ignition switch.
  • connects the battery (10655) to the starter motor.
The TR sensor on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles prevents starter motor engagement unless the transmission is in the NEUTRAL or PARK position. For additional information, refer to Section 307-01A or Section 307-01B .

Do you know what ignition switch is ? the electrical part. , how about the starter relay , transmission range sensor ! There is one thing you can try , move gear selector to neutral an see if it starts then . If that does nothing ,check for B+ voltage going at the starter relay . Jumping pins 30 & 87 at the relay socket , where the relay plugs into . will cause the starter to engage an spin the engine . If you look on the bottom of the relay you will see four sets of numbers 30 & 87 - 30 should have B+ voltage , 87 goes to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . An 85 & 86 are the control side .86 at the relay socket comes from ignition switch through the trans range sensor to the starter relay coil ( electro magnet ) . Watch these videos too .

Which wires connect to (starter) solenoid?

Two heavy gage red wires one from the battery the side goes to the starter . The other is red with a light blue stripe ( small gage wire) Goes to small terminal . Starter solenoid located on inner fender ,engine compartment , not on top of starter ?
You can go to www.bbbind.com/ for free wiring diagrams . On the home page click on technical information five box will come up . Click on tsb's an free wiring diagrams . On the next page go to bottom an click on I agree . Next page click wiring diagrams an then enter your vehicle make, model ,year , engine size. Then under system click on engine , then subsystem click on starting ,then click search . Then click on the blue links one at a time . Do you know how to read a wiring diagram ? At the top you can zoom in closer an on the sides click on the arrows to expand the diagram right an left . The first diagram if you look on the left side near the battery you will see the starter relay has three wires going to it. Good luck hope this helps >

94ford probe won't start

Well Sandra , the thing to do would be to get it to turn the engine over with the key , Then diagnose the no start problem . Look at a wiring diagram (do you know what that is ?) When you turn the key to start , the electrical part of the ignition switch sends B+ voltage to the starter interrupter relay through the clutch switch to the starter motor solenoid . Testing the electrical circuit with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter with the help of a wiring diagram ,so you know where to test is the proper way to diagnose the problem . Not guessing ,an rigging the stuff . You can find free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine ! Under system click on engine ,then under subsystem click starting . Click the search button then the third blue link .

Diagram engine transmission wiring need

when i worked on them when they were new, all the engines i saw had the starter under the front.
the front exhaust manifold is right above. i left there in 92 so its possible for it to be different.
i think you can get the diagrams you want for free at the library. as well as every other page of the book to read.
photocopies are a dime each and you can tape together a legible schematic to take home.
diagnostic clues and pinpoint tests are usually available thru the automotive database your library uses.
where i live, i can get chilton thru them on my home pc.
if i want better info, i can get mitchell at the library. they also have haynes manuals, motor, and chilton. especially GM info. motor is a big fan of GM

I AM TRYING TO REPLACE MY STARTER ON A 1997 CHEV LUMINA 3.1 V6. I NEED A DIAGRAM OF THE STARTER

Hello Larry...Here are the steps to take. Detach the ground (black) battery cable. Lift the front of your vehicle with a floor jack, support it with jack stands and chock the rear wheels.
Unfasten the retaining nuts holding the heavy (battery) cable and the thin wire to the back of the starter solenoid (the small cylinder mounted on top of the starter motor) with a wrench. Move the heavy and thin wires out of the way.
Loosen the two mounting bolts holding the starter motor to the engine block with a ratchet, large ratchet extension and socket. Hold the motor assembly with one hand and finish removing the two starter mounting bolts. Make a note of the position of each mounting bolt, since they are of different sizes, and of any shims located between the starter motor, mounting bolts and engine block.
Remove the starter motor from the vehicle

To Install:
Position the new starter motor in place with one hand and install the two mounting bolts finger tight with your free hand, along with any shims installed with the original starter. Failing to replace the shims may cause the starter to grind against the flywheel or engage and fail to start the engine

Tighten the two mounting bolts with the ratchet, extension & socket.
Install the heavy cable and wire in their respective mounting studs at the back of the starter solenoid and install the retaining nuts finger tight. Tighten the nuts with the wrench; (careful not to overtighten)
Lower your vehicle off the jack stands...Attach the ground (black) battery cable.

There you have it, included is a picture of the starter, good luck, i hope this helps.

  4. Detach the electrical connections from the starter.

  1. Unfasten the starter motor retaining bolts, then remove the starter.

  2. To install:

WARNING Before installing the starter to the engine, make sure the electrical terminals are secure by tightening the nut next to the cap on the solenoid battery terminal. If this terminal is not tight, starter damage may occur.
    1. Secure the electrical terminal on the solenoid. Tighten the solenoid battery terminal inside nut to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm). -27 inch lbs. (22-27 Nm).
    2. Position the starter motor, then install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
